The Spy Next Door (Original Title: My Spy ) is an American action comedy directed by Peter Segal from 2020. Dave Bautista and Chloe Coleman can be seen in the leading roles . The film was released in German cinemas on March 12, 2020.

The former Special Forces soldier JJ worked for the CIA after his military service and had himself smuggled into the Russian mafia while disguised as an arms dealer. In doing so, he prevented the plutonium from being handed over to the mafia on the site of the decommissioned Chernobyl nuclear power plant , but was exposed in the process and subsequently switched off all those present. Celebrated as a hero, he returns to Langley , but is informed by his superior David Kim that there was a second plutonium core that was stolen by the terrorist Hassan. According to Kim, he plans to hand over the radioactive element to the criminal Victor Marquez. Marquez, in turn, still needs weapons plans that his enemy brother hid before Victor killed him. For this reason, Kim puts analyst Bobbi and JJ on the widow of Victor's brother in case she is contacted by her brother-in-law.
In Chicago , JJ and Bobbi move into the apartment next to the target person, the nurse Kate Newton, and her nine-year-old daughter Sophie. Both of them recently moved to the United States from Paris, and Sophie is having trouble making friends at school. When Kate leaves her apartment, JJ takes the opportunity to install hidden cameras in the apartment. These are found by Sophie after a short time, who then traces the signal back to the two CIA agents. There she collects evidence on a cell phone that exposes JJ and Bobbi. With this weapon in hand, she blackmails the former soldiers to accompany them to an ice rink, where many of her classmates meet because her mother has little time for her for professional reasons. Since Sophie notices that there is a likeable man under JJ's tough shell, and she feels an affection for him, she blackmailed him at first so that he accompanies her to school or teaches her spy tricks, for example. A little later, she initiates that JJ and her mother get closer, which ultimately leads to a date between the two. At the same time, JJ is becoming more and more responsible towards the neighboring daughter.
Meanwhile, Kim and his colleagues in Berlin are following the trail of Victor Marquez, who comes into possession of the plutonium core at a meeting with Hassan and then fakes his death. For this reason, JJ and Bobbi are ordered back from their mission and even suspended by Kim from duty, as Kim does not approve of the friendship between the agent and Sophie. When they are packing up their things in Chicago, JJ discovers that Marquez is in Kate's apartment. The weapons plans are said to be there, as an acquaintance of his deceased brother told him days earlier. While he is taking Kate, Sophie and JJ hostage, he finds a USB stick with the plans in the family dog's collar. The neighbors Carlos and Todd, who join shortly afterwards, turn out to be mercenaries who are also targeting the plans. Bobbi, who was following the action via the hidden cameras, storms the scene armed and is able to take out Carlos and Todd. Marquez, however, can escape and takes Sophie with him as his life insurance. When he tries to flee with an airplane, it comes to a showdown, where JJ, Sophie and Kate with their combined forces can eliminate the terrorist and secure the plans.
In Langley, JJ and Bobbi are rehabilitated by Kim and, at their own request, stationed in Chicago, where JJ has a relationship with Kate from now on.

In October 2017 it was announced that Dave Bautista had signed a contract with the production company STX Entertainment . Accordingly, he was supposed to star in an action comedy that was produced by him and Jonathan Meisner and supervised by Drew Simon for the studio. At the end of July 2018, the Hollywood Reporter finally reported that in Peter Segal a director for the film, which in the meantime got the title My Spy , had been found. In addition to Bautista and Meisner, Chris Bender also acts as a producer, while the script was written by the brothers Jon and Erich Hoeber , who previously worked in the same role for the films RED - Älter, Härter, Besser , the sequel to RED 2 and Meg . Shortly after filming began in Toronto on October 15, 2018 , it was announced that Chloe Coleman , Kristen Schaal , Ken Jeong and Parisa Fitz-Henley had joined the cast. Shooting was officially completed on November 30, 2018.
A first trailer was shown at CinemaCon in April 2019, which was also released digitally a little later. An official film poster was also released at the same time. One month before the originally planned US release date in August 2019, the film was postponed to the first quarter of 2020. In December of the same year, the US release date was postponed again from January 10th to March 13th, 2020 in order to be able to attract more viewers in the course of the spring break . Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , the cinema release was initially postponed a third time to April 17, 2020. It was later announced that Amazon Studios had secured distribution rights for the United States and other areas where The Spy Next Door appeared on June 26, 2020. In Germany, the film opened in cinemas as scheduled on March 12, 2020. Just two months later, on May 15, 2020, The Spy from Next Door appeared digitally. A release on DVD and Blu-ray is planned for July 3, 2020.

In the United States, The Spy Next Door has been rated PG-13 by the MPA . In Germany, the film was approved by the FSK for children aged 12 and over. The reason for the release states that the film was staged with numerous typical genre elements and a mixture of cheerful dialogue scenes and fast-paced action. The little protagonist becomes a clever and courageous identification figure for young viewers. Although primary school children could still be overwhelmed by individual violent and intensely threatening scenes, 12-year-olds [...] would be relieved by the humor, quiet moments and the positive basic atmosphere of the film so that they could process the film without impairment .

The film has so far won over 49% of the critics on Rotten Tomatoes and received a Metascore of 46 out of 100 possible points on Metacritic .
All in all, Tom Beasley from flickeringmyth.com is positive about the work. While it's a movie you've seen hundreds of times and the familiar premise is potentially a problem, Dave Bautista's unique and compelling charisma makes a lot of things good. Because of his awkwardness, he is responsible for many physical follies and comedy, but also for the heart in the story. Not only because of the contrasts to the character of Chloe Coleman , a warm chemistry arises, also the relationship between JJ and Kate Newton is surprisingly tender. While Kristen Schaal is still making the best of her signed role, the film is being pushed too quickly into the limits of its genre. This is expressed, for example, in the boring and uninspired action sequences, which, as is typical of the genre, would rely on volume and shake cameras. Nevertheless, the fast-paced film could convince Beasley, not least thanks to numerous talented supporting actors.
Kathrin Häger from the film service, however, sees mostly negative aspects in the film. So, according to her, Bautista is a "wrong choice". Due to his rigid facial expressions, his embodiment becomes one-dimensional and his figure becomes a dull thug without sensitivity. The well-known "bodybuilder-meets-lonely-child" story lacks dramaturgy, the spy next door is also too undifferentiated and reflective about and like the main character. Despite the child's story, it is ultimately not a family film because of the many deaths. Only the mother-daughter team is positively emphasized by Häger, which in a way gives the story a drive.
The film critic Antje Wessels comes to a similar conclusion. As expected, the spy next door is an average comedy that adheres to genre rules and that never has the potential to be better. The film begins amusing, but has too many interchangeable action scenes in which one would at least have relied on practical effects. Even if the film is not particularly brutal, it would be too action-heavy for children, but there would be too many "interpersonal chills" for adults. So the question arises as to the target group of the film. Wessels positively emphasizes the chemistry between the main characters and in particular the “charm bolt” Bautista, who almost single-handedly fights the predictable story. Even Ken Jeong could persuade and was even the best of the entire film, but I'm still far too rare. As a conclusion, the film writer draws, The spy next door feels like a commissioned work of an unimaginative script without passion.
