history

Katharina-von-Bora-Church
St. Nicolai Church

In 1382 the originally Slavic settlement appeared as Tornicz for the first time in a document, the current district of Werkleitz in 1494 as Wercklitzke . The churches in both places ( Katharina von Bora Church (Werkleitz) , St. Nicolai Church (Tornitz) ) have been in existence as fortified churches since the beginning of the 10th century.

In the past, Tornitz and Werkleitz were often exposed to devastating floods (especially after dike breaches) due to their location near the mouth of the Saale in the Elbe (1651, 1670, 1752, 1760, 1784 , 1830, 1926, 1939 and 1988).

Since 1620 there have been regular ferry connections across the Saale from Werkleitz to Groß Rosenburg .

The places belonging to the former County of Barby were part of the Kingdom of Westphalia from 1807 to 1815 , after the Congress of Vienna the area became part of Prussia (district of Calbe / S. In the "Province of Saxony").

From the middle of the 19th century onwards, new job opportunities arose in Tornitz. So post mills and a steam brick were built. The streets were paved and a dairy started operating. In 1911 electrical energy came into the communities. The Alfred lignite mine was closed again after a few years in 1915 because it was unprofitable (the lakes in the area, which were created after water ingress into the mine - alder pond, green pond, civil servant pond, poplar pond ) are reminiscent of this time .

At the same time as the Schönebeck district was formed, Werkleitz was incorporated into Tornitz on July 1, 1950. In the same year, the world's first low- shaft furnace was built in the immediate vicinity in Calbe (Saale) , which offered many Tornitzers new jobs (until 1970). From 1975 to 1978 Tornitz received a central drinking water pipe. In 1984 the community was the "most beautiful village in the Magdeburg district". In the period up to the turn of 1989 the community was dominated by agriculture. In 1991 the LPG Tornitz-Werkleitz became an Agrar GmbH, a dairy farm and a sow facility. In 1991 a gravel works in the village started dismantling, in 1995 the local metal construction company was expanded. In the 1990s, households were connected to it central sewer. The renovation and stabilization of the dikes has received special attention in recent years.

On May 22, 1993, the founding meeting of the Werkleitz Gesellschaft eV was held in the “Zur Post” restaurant in Tornitz . 23 people from all over Germany took part in the constitution of the Center for Artistic Visual Media Saxony-Anhalt . Before that, the first annual presentation of the society ( Werkleitz Biennale ) called Change of scenery with 41 participating artists was held on the private property at Ziegelei 3 in Werkleitz .

On January 1, 2010, the previously independent communities of Tornitz, Breitenhagen , Glinde , Groß Rosenburg , Lödderitz , Pömmelte , Sachsendorf , Wespen and Zuchau and the city of Barby (Elbe) merged to form the new city of Barby. At the same time, the Elbe-Saale administrative community , to which Tornitz belonged, was dissolved.
