Tournoi de France (women's football)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Tournoi de France (“France Tournament”) is an invitation football competition for women's national teams that was organized by the French football association FFF and held for the first time in spring 2020. It is part of the package of measures (Plan de Féminization de Football) with which the association wants to promote the further anchoring of women's football in public perception, which it has been actively pursuing under its President Noël Le Graët since 2011 . At the same time, the first event commemorates the 50th anniversary of the official recognition of women's football by the FFF (March 1970).

This tournament, which is designed in the form of a tournament , is in competition with several other women's tournaments that take place every year at the beginning of March, namely the Algarve Cup (since 1994), the Cyprus Cup (since 2008) and the SheBelieves Cup in the USA (since 2016 ). The Tournoi de France is to take place annually in a different French region .

An eponymous tournament, but for men's national teams, had the FFF already in 1988 as well, ahead of the World Cup on home soil , in 1997 aligned.

Despite the competition with other tournaments mentioned at the beginning, it was possible to win three strong opponents for the first edition. The French women, fourth in the FIFA world rankings at the turn of the year 2019/2020, faced Canada (8th place) in the opening game , then Brazil (9th place) and finally the reigning European champions from the Netherlands (3rd place). In contrast to the hosts, these three teams qualified for the Olympic football tournament in the summer of that year .

The northern French cities of Valenciennes ( Stade du Hainaut for 24,920 spectators) and Calais ( Stade de l'Épopée , which has a capacity of 12,430 seats) were selected as the venues.

Although all six games on French television were broadcast live - those with French participation on W9 , the other on the streaming platform of M6  - had already mid-January, 17,000 cards found their customers in the first 24 hours after the start of free sale. However, the FFF also had very moderate entrance fees (from four euros, all three games in Valenciennes for 52 euros).

The tournament opened on time regardless of the COVID-19 pandemic, which is also spreading in France . However, the French Minister of Sports Roxana Mărăcineanu decided on March 9th that the last two matches the day after had to be played in front of empty stands.
