Above & Beyond is a British-Finnish trance project by music producers Jonathan "Jono" Grant, Tony McGuinness and Paavo Siljamäki.
Band history
Jono Grant and Paavo Siljamäki already knew each other from Westminster University and founded the music label Anjunabeats together in the summer of 1999 , the first release of which ( Anjunabeats Volume 1 ) received great support from Paul Oakenfold and Pete Tong . Tony McGuinness became aware of the producer duo through his brother Liam and asked them to help finalize a remix for the club classic Home by Chakra in 2000 . Their version appeared under the name Above and Beyond Remix and became number one on the UK dance charts (mainly due to the support of Pete Tong). As a result, Above and Beyond became a permanent project.
The trio gained worldwide attention with the remix of Madonna's What it feels like for a girl , which was also used for the official music video.
The first own single was released in 2002 under the title Far from in Love and became a club hit.
In addition to the successful remix projects and in-house productions, Above & Beyond also work as a DJ team. The trio won the Essential Mix of the Year award from BBC Radio 1 and has already been nominated in numerous categories at the International Dance Music Awards . In 2009 they won the award in the “Best Artist (Group)” category.
Above & Beyond have already achieved a top 5 position four times in the DJ ranking of DJ Magazine . In 2011 they took 5th place.
On January 16, 2015, Above & Beyond's 3rd studio album called "We are all we need" was released in Germany, Finland, Spain and Italy. In the USA and Great Britain the album was officially released on January 19th, 2015. There are a total of 16 songs on the LP, many of which are in the typical Above & Beyond style, mostly with a wave pad synthesizer. But also songs without the typical dance beat. With these songs they want to build on their acoustic album from the beginning of 2014. At the same time as the album was launched in Europe, the British began their "We Are All We Need - European Tour 2015" through Central and Northern Europe. The tour was sold out on January 15, 2015 in the Live Music Hall in Cologne . During their tour, two of the three band members always stopped in Helsinki , Copenhagen , Oslo , Stockholm , Antwerp , Amsterdam , Paris , Glasgow , London and Manchester . The tour was almost completely sold out. Above & Beyond were accompanied as preliminary acts by various interpreters from the "Anjuna Family", u. a. Lane 8. After the tour through Europe, the three musicians started their big tour through North America in February 2015, after which they visited a few selected places worldwide.
For the Grammy Awards 2016 , the trio was nominated for the song We're All We Need in the category Best Dance Recording .
On January 26th, 2018 the new studio album "Common Ground" was released.
Trance Around the World / Group Therapy Radio
Every Friday evening the trio also publishes a moderated radio program called Group Therapy Radio (ABGT) , which can be received via various broadcasters. Until November 3, 2012, the radio show was called Trance Around the World (TATW) . Since episode 227 (from August 1, 2008) the program can also be downloaded free of charge as a podcast via iTunes or from a special website including track lists. According to its own information, Trance Around the World had over 30 million listeners in the last few weeks; no information is currently available for the new radio show. Comparable programs are, for example, A State Of Trance by Armin van Buuren or VONYC Sessions by Paul van Dyk .
Almost every episode of Group Therapy Radio (except special programs) begins with the intro and a 60- to 90-minute moderated DJ set by the producers. There are several regular sections: First, the Record of the Week , a track that is particularly highlighted in the broadcast and is selected by Above & Beyond itself. This is followed by the Push the Button track, a song that fans of the show select each week on the Facebook page. The name Push the Button is an allusion to a habit of the trio to bring a random person onto the stage during live performances, who is then allowed to press the play button again when a track is interrupted. This is followed by the flashback track , a classic that is played again, and then comes the guest mix , where a different Above & Beyond DJ is invited every week to fill the last 30 minutes of the show with music. These final minutes are not moderated.
OceanLab
Since 2000 the trio has been publishing together with singer Justine Suissa under the name OceanLab . Their first single was Clear Blue Water . This already brought them recognition in the scene. Three more singles appeared by 2006. Then the four decided to start a studio album. Since they had other projects in the works, it took almost two years until this album was finished. In July 2008 it was released under the name Sirens of the Sea .
