Trap Them is an American extreme metal and punk band from Seattle , Washington that was formed in 2001.

history

Singer Ryan McKenney ( Backstabbers Inc. ) and guitarist Brian Vincent Izzi ( December Wolves ) worked together in a comic book store in Salem , New Hampshire in 2001 . After the two quickly became friends, they decided to found Trap Them that same year. The band name was borrowed from the film Naked Among Cannibals , which is called Trap Them and Kill Them in English . Together they recorded their first EP with a drum computer , which had a circulation of 100 units. About half of them were sent to various labels, but this was unsuccessful. By 2004, the two of them returned to their bands. After Izzi was also active at Backstabbers Inc., both decided to leave the band and concentrate on Trap Them. The post of bassist took over Derek Black and that of drummer Mike Sharp. At the beginning of 2007 the band got a contract with the label Trash Art! about which the EP Cunt Heir to the Throne was released, which was followed by the debut album Sleepwell Deconstructor . The album was recorded by Converge guitarist Kurt Ballou at Godcity Studios . Meanwhile the band had moved to Seattle. After the release of both records, the band also switched to Deathwish Inc. , the label of Converge singer Jacob Bannon . The EP Séance Prime was released in 2007 , on which Nat Coghlan could be heard as bassist and Scott DeFusco as drummer. In 2008 they went on tour through Europe with The Ocean and Rotten Sound , during which the three bands also played with the Swedish band Victims in Munich . The tour was followed by a split release with Extreme Noise Terror . In 2008 a second album was released with Seizures in Barren Praise . Meanwhile, with the addition of bassist Steve Lacour and drummer Chris Maggio, a permanent line-up had been found. In 2010 the EP Rilth Rations was released , before the album Darker Handcraft followed in March 2011 . Mike Justain could then be heard as the new drummer. The album was again recorded by Kurt Ballou at Godcity Studios. In the same year the band played among other things at the Roadburn Festival . At the end of 2013 the band recorded their next album Blissfucker with Ballou at Godcity Studios. Here the drummer Brad Fickeisen and the bassist Galen Baudhuin were represented as new members. The album was released on Prosthetic Records in mid-2014, like its predecessor . Up to this point the band had performed with groups such as Extreme Noise Terror, Converge, Napalm Death , Every Time I Die , Rotten Sound, Disfear and Toxic Holocaust , among others .

style

According to laut.de , the band on Sleepwell Deconstructor plays a mixture of Grindcore, Hardcore Punk and Death Metal. According to Allmusic's Mark Deming, the band mix the heavy electric guitars of grindcore, with the speed and aggressive lyrics of hardcore punk. McKenney and Izzi would share a common preference for bands like Entombed , Disfear and Motörhead . According to Sebastian Schilling from Rock Hard , the band plays a mixture of punk , hardcore punk, grindcore and death metal. Ryan McKenney stated in an interview with Schilling that the members were not influenced by any particular bands. However, the guitarist Izzi likes metal of the 1980s and 1990s, including all subgenres of extreme metal. McKenney himself brought influences from punk and hardcore punk. Ronny Bittner reviewed the album Blissfucker an issue earlier in Rock Hard and described the music as a mixture of crustcore, hardcore punk and grindcore, but the album was "no longer as intense and mangy as the previous work". According to Christian Hector from Metal Hammer, the electric guitars sound like Dismember . The songs would mostly deal with depression, despair and blasphemy , but political issues would not be discussed. In addition to groups like Dismember and Entombed, left-wing crustcore bands would be among the band's influences. According to Melanie Aschenbrenner, the band plays fast hardcore punk on Seizures in Barren Praise . There are rarely slow passages on the album. Aschenbrenner described the music on Darker Handcraft as a mixture of punk, metal, hardcore punk and grindcore. She also assigned the music to the D-beat . According to Ollie Fröhlich from Ox-Fanzine , the band plays music based on bands like Entombed and Converge. Singer KcKenney stated again in an interview with Fröhlich that the band doesn't want to be seen as a political band because they don't want to be reduced to one topic. Nevertheless, the group is a sociopolitical band that focuses on issues such as despair, alienation and frustration about today's living conditions. In another interview with Fröhlich, McKenney stated that the songs on the first albums were still called days and that he painted a picture for each song or day. He is also responsible for writing the lyrics. In his review of Séance Prime , Fröhlich assigned the band to hardcore punk and described the music as a mixture of Motörhead, Black Flag and Entombed. The songs are not catchy. Uwe Kubassa from Ox-Fanzine described the music on Seizures in Barren Praise as a mixture of hardcore punk attitude and Death 'n' Roll from the Entombed brand. Combine wild passages with " doomy - grooving mid-tempo hammers". In addition, you can hear the music as a “Swedish instrument tuning”. In his review of Darker Handcraft, Ollie Fröhlich assigned the band to Grindcore. The vocals are reminiscent of Jacob Bannon from Converge. The electric guitar sounds like Uffe Cederlund from Entombed is playing it, as the sound and riffs are very similar.
