A tassel , rare Quoddel or wheal , and tassel , is a coherent bundle of threads or cords , at the upper end often limited by a node or a decorative bead. The shape is like a tuft and is reminiscent of a brush . Originally, the tassel was made as the decorated end of a cord from the cord thread itself. A tassel is used as a trimmings .

In the case of a spherical shape, one speaks of a bobble instead .

In mammals (e.g. house donkey , domestic cattle , lions ) the hairy end of the tail is also referred to as a tassel. The lower, open end of a braid is also called a tassel.

Use in the military

Tassels were part of the uniform of German soldiers from the army of the German Empire to the Wehrmacht . They were worn by all crew and sergeant ranks up to the sergeant at the side gun (bayonet); The portepee was worn in the ranks above . The shape of the tassel is divided into the wreath, the slide and the stem. The colors of the wreath and stem indicated which company or battery a soldier belonged to, and the color of the stem provided information about the soldier's battalion or division . As a mnemonic for the assignment of colors there was the saying:

sergeant ranks wore tassels in the colors green and Silver.

Men and NCOs of the cavalry and mounted artillery wore a thong on their sabers in place of the tassel . NCO ranks from sergeant upwards and officers wore a portepee on their sabers .
