When Charlie abdicates, Alan tries to pay tribute to him, but is repeatedly disturbed by heckling from Charlie's past affairs. Then Rose speaks, she says that Charlie was the love of her life and that she also forgave him for his infidelity after the marriage proposal and how he died afterwards in the metro in Paris. Evelyn then explains to Alan at home that she has to sell the house, even if Charlie bequeathed it to him, because he cannot pay the costs. She offers him that he and Jake can stay with her.

In the evening a parcel courier rings the doorbell and brings Charlie's urn. Alan sits down on the sofa and talks to her. He says he cannot grant Charlie's last wish that Pamela Anderson swallow his ashes. He then decides to scatter the ashes on the beach and opens the urn and wants to go to the door where Walden is outside. Alan is so frightened that he spills the ashes. Berta just says that she doesn't suck it up. Alan lets in Walden, who explains that he just wanted to kill himself, but the water was too cold. He's on the phone with Bridget, but she doesn't want him back. Walden explains to Alan that he is very rich, but that it doesn't help him in love. Alan then suggests that they go out for a drink and Walden agrees. In the bar, the two discuss their previous lives. Alan recommends that Walden speak to another woman and pick up what he is promptly able to do. Finally they end up at home with two women and Alan again loses out because they both go into the bedroom with Walden. The next morning, Walden tells Alan that he wants to buy the house.

Walden asks Berta if she would work for him too, and she accepts. Alan moves in with his mother, but forgets to take Jake with him. Evelyn explains to Alan that he doesn't actually have to unpack because she doesn't want him to stay any longer. She tells him that there will be a man visiting that evening, and Alan finds her explanations repulsive. Fortunately, Walden rings the doorbell and Alan escapes with him. You're going to Walden's house because he wants to talk to Bridget. Since she does not open the entrance gate, they climb over it, where they are hit by an electric shock that Bridget sets off. After that she lets them into the house and Walden tries to win them back. Bridget refuses, because she is tired of looking after Walden.

The next morning, Walden and Alan wake up naked and hungover on the terrace in Malibu. They drank quite a lot and went swimming naked in the sea with Berta. Later a woman knocks on the patio door and asks about Charlie. Alan explains that Charlie 'passed away' and she starts crying. When Walden comes into the kitchen, she is suddenly no longer sad and adores him. Alan wants to go and when he opens the front door, Bridget is standing outside, who wants to talk to Walden again. Alan saves him by claiming the woman is his girlfriend. When Alan leaves, Walden is very grateful to him: if he needs anything, he can always ask. Alan therefore asks Walden if he can temporarily stay with him again. For Walden this is okay and he closes the front door, whereupon Alan says to himself: "I'm back".

Walden tells Jake that he dropped out of school because he was too intelligent and Jake now thinks he is because he didn't pass all subjects like Walden did. He has a dinner date with Bridget that evening and asks Jake for a good restaurant. He recommends “All you can eat”. Dinner with Bridget becomes a disaster and ends in a food fight with a child. Bridget sees herself confirmed by the fact that she wants to divorce Walden.

Back at home, Walden meets Judith who wants to confront him because he put the flea in Jake's ear to quit school. She is about to settle in with Walden, but because Alan knows what she's up to, he notifies Bridget. A check for $ 50,000 and the fact that Bridget knows she's a scam makes Courtney leave. At that moment, Jennifer comes into the bedroom and since Walden and Zoey are talking on video on the phone, Zoey sees her. Therefore she breaks the connection.

Walden wants to fly to London after her to clear up the misunderstanding. He asks Alan if he will accompany him so that he can credibly explain to Zoey that he had nothing with Jennifer. Since Alan actually had an appointment with Lyndsey, they take her with them too. On the plane, Lyndsey drinks too much again and vomits on Alan and Walden. Since Zoey and Ava are now moving in with Walden for a week on a trial basis, Alan has to leave the field. Since he has no money for a hotel, he goes to Lyndsey. Zoey has to run some errands, but Ava doesn't want to go, so Walden offers to take care of her. He soon regrets his decision, because Ava takes him over and he soon can't anymore. When Zoey comes home, Walden is sleeping on the sofa.

Lyndsey takes advantage of Alan's presence to do some chores for her around the house. Alan hopes, of course, that this will give him more power with Lyndsey. But problems soon arise; first he gets an electric shock at the fuse box, then he gets a door on his head from Eldridge and Jake and breaks his nose and finally he falls out of bed and injures himself even more. Despite all this, he's still sharp.

Ava wakes Walden early in the morning because she wants breakfast. Zoey is happy that Walden is getting up, but soon he falls asleep on the kitchen table. Alan's bad luck continues when Lyndsey says she smells a dead animal under the house, and he goes to see. But the animal is still alive and causing further damage. Walden and Alan then meet in the bar and decide to end the whole thing by moving Alan back in with Walden.

Walden now wants to throw Zoey out of the house so that Alan can move in again. But she wraps him around her finger by mentioning how happy Ava is and that she doesn't talk about anyone else than him. Walden has to capitulate and when Alan stands by the door he has to confess that he didn't make it. Alan collapses and Walden says at first that he is just acting. But it turns out that Alan had a mild heart attack. Walden wants to do everything for his friend to get better, but Zoey does not agree.

In a dream, a woman appears to Alan who pretends to be the ghost of Charlie. She / he tells his conscience that he should finally stop being a parasite and stand on his own two feet. Alan takes this to heart and leaves the hospital at his own request to inform Walden that he is moving out. He found a small room in a rundown house. In the evening he telephones Jake to explain that he is no longer allowed to go to Walden. Then he goes to sleep and Charlie appears again. He reveals to Alan that he had to go to Hell first before Alan left his house and that he was just kidding.

Zoey and Walden are about to make themselves comfortable at home alone when Jake arrives with his girlfriend. Walden asks him if he hadn't spoken to his father, Jake cheekily says no. Alan tries to get back into the house the next morning by pretending to have another heart attack. Nevertheless, Walden takes him to the hospital.

Alan returns home after the second stay in the hospital, Walden promises him on the doorstep that he doesn't have to worry about anything and should just relax. Inside, Lyndsey, Jake, Eldridge, Berta, Evelyn and Zoey are waiting for him as a surprise. He is spoiled by everyone except Zoey, who is skeptical. Walden has bought him a new bed and a big TV, Berta serves him food in bed, his ex-wife Judith comes to visit with good news and Lyndsey provides sexual relaxation under the covers during the dessert.

When Alan goes to the family doctor for a check-up the next day, it turns out that he is healthy. But he still wants to be sick because he likes the sweet life of being pampered. The doctor advises him to lie. His mother waits outside and consoles him with a shopping tour to comfort him about the bad news. Walden installed a stair lift at home so Alan could easily get to the upstairs hot tub. But Zoey is still skeptical and openly threatens him to stop acting. Alan continues his little game until he is shown a video by Zoey in front of the assembled group, which a private detective recorded and shows him playing beach volleyball with pretty girls. Since he has no other way out, he fakes another heart attack, but nobody takes him seriously anymore. When Walden wants to go to bed that evening, Alan is still there. Walden asks him how long he wants to stay in bed, Alan replies: "Until I'm no longer ashamed." Walden replies: "So long?"
