The Ukrainian Falcons (Ukrainian: Українські Соколи / Ukrayins'ki Sokoly ; in German Ukrainian Falcons ) is the official aerobatic team of the Ukrainian armed forces .

history

The squadron was founded in 1995, the first training flights began in 1996. In 1997, the international debut took place at the British air show Royal International Air Tattoo . Machines of the types MiG-29 , Su-27 and Aero L-39 Albatros are used. The squadron was stationed at an airfield in the Crimea south of Kirowske ( Lage ) in the Rajon of the same name .

accident

The aerobatic team achieved tragic fame in 2002 when a Sukhoi Su-27 of the Ukrainian Falcons crashed into the crowd on the Ukrainian military airfield Sknyliw near Lviv on July 27th. The Lviv flight accident is considered to be the worst flight accident in aerobatics. 85 people were killed. The two pilots were able to save themselves with the ejection seat . As part of the legal process, the two pilots were found guilty and sentenced to several years in prison.
