Sagar Pawan ( Sanskrit : sea breeze) is the aerobatic demonstration team of the Indian navy aviators . It is one of only two naval aerobatic teams in the world, the other being the US Navy's Blue Angels . The team has four Hindustan Aeronautics HJT-16 Kiran Mk.2 trainer aircraft and is based at Indian Naval Station Hansa in Dabolim, South India. The color scheme of the aircraft is dark blue and white.

history

The team began aerobatic training in late 2001. The squadron captain of the INAS 551 was Cdr JS Tewatia. However, this time was informal. In the second half of 2002 there was a change to the current paintwork of the aircraft and smoke generators were installed on the inner wing stations. The team was initially called Sagar Kiran . Under this name, the team (at that time with only three aircraft) flew its debut on May 11, 2003 to celebrate the golden anniversary of Indian naval aviation in Kochi . The team's name was later changed to Sagar Pawan. The Sagar Pawan Aerobatic Team or SPAT is also known as INSPAT (IN = Indian Navy). The team is led by Cdr Yashwant Hemant Karkare. Since it was founded, the team has carried out flight demonstrations in Kochi, Visakhapatnam , Mumbai ( Gateway of India ), Pune (NDA, Khadakwasla), Lonavla (INS Shivaji) and a number of other locations as well as, of course, at their home location in Goa . It has also flown screenings at the India International Film Festival . If the aerobatic colleagues from the Air Force, Surya Kiran , flying the same aircraft, or the Red Arrows of the Royal Air Force in Goa flying demonstrations, Sagar Pawan interacts with them. INAS 551 was appointed admiral staff unit. She was recognized for her contribution to the Navy as a training team and for helping set up the aerobatics team. On March 3, 2010, a Sagar Pawan Team plane crashed in Hyderabad while conducting an airshow. Pilot Suresh Kumar Maurya and copilot Rahul Nair were killed in the crash.
