Ulf Harald Linde (born April 15, 1929 in Stockholm ; † October 12, 2013 there ) was a Swedish art critic , museum director , writer , jazz musician and composer .

In 1963 he became a member of the Royal Academy of Liberal Arts . On December 20, 1977 he succeeded the writer Eyvind Johnson as a member of the Svenska Academies in chair number 11, and he headed the Thielska galleriet art museum in Stockholm for twenty years .

Life

Linde, the son of a Danish engineer, graduated from high school in 1947 and appeared as a jazz musician and vibraphonist in the early 1950s . In 1948 he played the vibraphone with Thore Jederby , with which the first recordings were made. In 1949 he worked with Arne Domnérus , James Moody and the Expressens Elitorkester . In 1950 he made recordings under his own name for Metronome Records ; Reinhold Svensson (p), Rolf Berg (g), Gunnar Almstedt (b) and Anders Burman (dr) belonged to his quintet . In 1951 and 1952 he was the best Swedish vibraphonist in the jazz critic orchestra ; In 1952 he accompanied Alice Babs . In the field of jazz he was involved in 21 recording sessions between 1948 and 1952.

Linde began studying chemistry at Stockholm University , followed by ethnography , theoretical philosophy , art history and composition . In 1953 he wrote the film music for Fästerdetektiven och Rasmus . He left the university without a degree and instead worked from 1951 to 1956 as an amanuensis at the Reich Association for Fine Arts. In 1952 he wrote his first art review and worked from 1956 to 1958 for the newspaper Dagens Nyheter .

In 1967 he was elected to the art academy. From 1968 to 1976 he held the newly established professorship for modern art theory at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm. In 1977, the year he was elected to the Svenska Academies, he became the director of the Thielska galleriet art museum and managed the institution until he retired in 1997.

His art critical work initially resulted in only a few large and extensive works. Instead, a large number of essays , brochures, and reprints existed. From the mid-1980s, however, three anthologies were published, including the 550-page Efter hand (1985), a standard work on Swedish art criticism in the second half of the 20th century, but also with many texts on architecture and literature. This was followed by the volume Svar (1999), which deals with the period after 1985 and mainly contains texts from the art magazine Artes . In the same year Presentationer appeared with Linde's short presentations of the artists he had presented in the Thielska galleriet .

Thanks to its special analytical, sensitive precision, Linde gained fame as a Swedish art critic as early as 1960 with the anthology Spejare . He collected a number of articles from Dagens Nyheter in advance and carried out investigations with a new art-theoretical approach to the works of Pablo Picasso and Marcel Duchamp as well as the representatives of informal art such as Henri Michaux or Jean Dubuffet .

He had an eye for the modernist, open art of the Dadaists and Cubists . He has written essays on almost all of the classics of modernism. This work culminated in 1986 in the work of Marcel Duchamp . Important writings about Swedish artists were for example Lennart Rodhe (1962), Siri Derkert (1964) and Ragnar Sandberg (1979).

Linde's interest in literature, initiated by earlier analyzes of the works of the writer Lars Ahlin , resulted in a number of essays, for example on Eyvind Johnson , Östen Sjöstrand , Nelly Sachs , Bengt Emil Johnson or André Breton , and in a selected translation volume with Wallace Stevens ' Poems Om att bara finnas (1998).

After a long period of illness, Linde returned to the public eye in 2007 with the two volumes Kritisk prosa av Oscar Levertin , a treatise on the writer Oscar Levertin (1862-1906), the most neglected representative of the Swedish fin de siècle . In his autobiography Från kart till fallfrukt - 70 korta chapters om mitt liv et cetera (2008) there is no critical distance between criticism and art, no attempt at objectivity.

Linde was married to Nina Öhman, who succeeded him as director of Thielska galleriet until 2011 .

Ulf Linde died on October 12, 2013.
