Ulrich Eigler (born February 19, 1959 in Karlsruhe ) is a German classical philologist .

Life

After graduating from the old-language Berthold-Gymnasium in Freiburg , Eigler studied Latin , Greek and history at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg , 1980–81 at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel and 1982–83 at the University of Vienna . In 1983 he passed the first state examination in Latin in Freiburg. This was followed by a study visit to the University of Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania. In 1984 he passed the first state examination in history in Freiburg.

1984-89 he was a research assistant at the seminar for Latin Philology of the Middle Ages at the chair of Johanne Autenrieth in Freiburg. In addition, he studied Middle Latin Philology and historical auxiliary sciences. In 1986, Eigler received his doctorate in Latin from Valerius Flaccus with the work Monological Speech Forms . In 1987 he passed the first state examination in Latin Philology of the Middle Ages, and in 1988 in Greek. 1989–91 he stayed in Rome as a postdoctoral fellow of the German Research Foundation , where he studied Greek palaeography with Guglielmo Cavallo . 1991–95 he was a research assistant at the Institute for Classical Philology at the University of Bamberg . In 1994 he was given the font Lectiones Vetustatis. Roman literature and history in Latin literature of late antiquity . 1995–98 he was C3 professor for classical philology at the University of Freiburg, 1998–2005 C4 professor for classical philology, especially Latin studies, at the University of Trier . In 2005 he followed a call to the University of Zurich .

In his research, Eigler deals with the literature of the Augustan period, the early imperial period and late antiquity . In addition, his research focuses on the reception of antiquity in modern literature and in film, as well as the conditions of the transmission of Latin texts.
