Place of collision

On October 7, 2018, the ship collided about 20  nautical miles north of Corsica with the anchored container ship CSL Virginia . The container ship operated by the Greek shipping company Cyprus Sea Lines belongs to the Hyundai 5000 ship type . The ship had last called at Genoa and had been anchored at the subsequent collision site for around 14 days without employment. The Ulysse was on the way from Genoa to Radès .

In the accident, the bow of the Ulysse collided on the starboard side with the midship area of the container ship. Both ships were damaged. The Ulysse initially remained in position to prevent a major water ingress at CSL Virginia . As a result of the collision, fuel leaked from the container ship's damaged tanks. Initially, there was talk of around 600 t of leaked fuel. The amount was later corrected to less than 200 t. The leaked fuel formed an oil slick that stretched over around 20 km and was around 300 to 400 m wide. During the subsequent cleaning work, large parts of the leaked oil were absorbed. About a week later, oil washed up on the Côte d'Azur , which was believed to be oil that had leaked as a result of the collision between the two ships.

On October 11, the two ships were separated from each other. The Ulysse initially remained at the scene of the accident before continuing its journey to Tunisia on October 12. The CSL Virginia left the scene of the accident around two weeks later.

Technical data and equipment

The ship is powered by four four-stroke - six-cylinder - diesel engines of the manufacturer Sulzer (Type: 6ZAL 40S) with a total of 14,000  kW power driven. The motors act on two controllable pitch propellers . The ship reaches a speed of 20  knots . It is equipped with two bow thrusters .

Two generators driven by the main engines, each with an output of 650 kW (812 kVA apparent power ) and four diesel generator sets, each  with 703 kW output (879 kVA apparent power), are available for power generation.

The ship has two ro-ro decks for the transport of trucks and trailers. The lower, closed of the two ro-ro decks is accessible via a stern ramp . The upper ro-ro deck is covered in the front part by the superstructure and open in the rear part. It is connected to the lower ro-ro deck by ramps. The ship also has a further ro-ro deck on which cars can be transported. The ro-ro decks are interrupted in the longitudinal direction amidships by chimneys and supply shafts. 1950 gauge meters are available on the ro-ro decks  , on which 128 trailers can be loaded.

The deck superstructures are located in the front third of the ship's length. They are built over the ro-ro deck and have four decks with the facilities for the passengers, the crew members and the bridge .
