Umile da Petralia or Petraia (* between 1580 and 1600 in Petralia Soprana ; † February 9, 1639 in Palermo ) was an Italian carver of the early Baroque in Sicily .

Life

The Minorite Father Umile da Petralia is considered to be one of the most important carvers of crucifixes and saints in the early Baroque, which are characterized by moving human expression. He was born Giovanni Francesco Pintorno between 1580 and 1600 in Petralia Soprana , a fief of the Duke of Montalto, the son of a woodcarver. He began his training in his father's workshop and then went to Palermo for further training. In 1616 he returned after his father's death, probably to continue his workshop. No documents are known about his life until 1623. Before 1623 he entered the Franciscan monastery of S. Maria di Gesù in Palermo and in November 1623 he was listed as "Frate Umile da Petralia Soprana". The novitiate took him to Nicosia , where he began to carve crucifixes, which can be found in numerous churches, especially in Sicily. In 1638 he moved to Palermo in the monastery of Sant'Antonio, where he died a year later and was buried in the church of Sant Antonino.
