action

Her best friend Patti, a lesbian, is pregnant and also believes Frances will not recover from the low blows. Patti invites Frances on a trip to Tuscany that she cannot take because of her pregnancy. At first Frances is skeptical, but in her lonely apartment, Frances likes the idea of leaving everything behind for a while.

After arriving in Tuscany, Frances reads an advertisement about an empty villa, Casa Bramasole. On a bus tour, the bus has to stop to let a flock of sheep pass. Frances notices that they are pulling out of the ad just outside the villa. For Frances this is a sign. She gets off the bus and tries to buy the villa, which she succeeds. She hires some Polish emigrants to renovate the house. She makes friends with the Italian neighbors and the Polish workers, as well as with the seller of the villa and with Katherine, an eccentric elderly lady.

Later, Frances takes in her friend Patti, who has been abandoned by her partner. A romance with the Italian Marcello fails, so that Frances no longer believes in a love affair.
