Location of Utfort in North Rhine-Westphalia

Utfort , also known as "Utford" or "Ootfurd" in old documents, is a residential area, officially a place of residence, in the Rheinkamp district of Moers in the Wesel district , North Rhine-Westphalia . The Utfort residential area is currently one of the areas in Moers in which the population is still increasing. With the increase from 4,254 (2000) to 5,017 people (as of December 31, 2013), it belongs to the growing residential areas and is a sought-after residential area in the city.

location

The Utfort area borders in the south on Moers-Mitte , the historic city area of Moers in the former county of Moers . Otherwise Utfort is completely surrounded by other residential areas in the city of Moers.

history

Middle Ages to the beginning of the 19th century

Residential places in Moers:

So far, no meaningful finds from the time before the early Middle Ages have been found directly within the Utfort area . On the other hand , an extensive burial ground was found in the northeastern area between Rheinberger Strasse and in front of the railway embankment, partly up to the area of Eick-West . This burial ground has so far comprised nine individual graves and dates from the early to middle Iron Age . In the graves, which are urn graves, burn bones and remains of the urn vessels including the associated cover bowls and broken pieces of pots and bowls were found.

In the Middle Ages to the 19th century, in the current area of Utfort, next to the Tervoort house , a former manor , only a few farms can be identified. Nevertheless, it was mentioned in documents as "Uuodfurd" as early as the 9th century. According to the name, a ford in the then much more water-bearing Moersbach should have given the name. With the exception of Haus Tervoort, located in the extreme southwest of Utfort, the older farms were mostly located further north on the border with the current residential area of Meerfeld , which at that time belonged to Repelen . Up until the beginning of the 19th century, the area south-east of Repelen to Moers was a forest area in which only smaller settlement islands existed. As late as 1850, when the public auction of land parcels in Utfort was announced, reference was made to the existing usable wood stock, which was part of the auction price.

Map of the county of Moers by Gerhard Mercator 1591

The few existing farms paid the "tithe" to the Counts of Moers and later to their legal successors. In the old map shown for the county of Moers, Utfort is shown as "Ootfordt" between Moers and Repelen. The Utfort farmers belonged to the parish Repelen for centuries and were subordinate to the judicial district of Moers. The exception to this was Haus Tervoort, which belonged to the parish of Moers before the 18th century, while Utfort only moved to Moers when the mayor's office in Repelen was formed.

The data for 1625 show the low settlement of Utfort. At this point in time there are 5 farms in Utfort. The data for 1834 with 80 residents in 18 buildings do not show a high settlement density. In the original cadastre from 1835 for the Mayor's Office Repelen, in addition to the settlement area for the "Kirchdorf Repelen", the inhabited area for Utfort is only shown near the Repelner Meer , to the right of the Moersbach. But this is only the northwesternmost area of the current area of Utfort. The street names: “Am Voetshof”, “Am Meetschenhof” and “Am Meerhof” are currently reminiscent of this rural past. In addition to the “Schardey's Hof”, Voetshof and Meetschenhof are documented as early as 1574.

The small settlement area "Fünderich" was located south of the Tervoort house and thus on the historical border of Utfort. However, this already belonged to the city of Moers and in 1834 with 9 houses and 58 residents it was almost as heavily populated as the entire area of Utfort. The street Am Fünderich is currently reminiscent of this older living area.

Modern times until 1945

Rheinkamp-Utfort, shaft 5/9, 1959

When Repelen became a central municipality at the end of the 18th century, nothing changed in terms of the affiliation of Utfort and various other peasant communities to the "Mayor's Office Repelen". There were no changes in the formation of the entire municipality of Repelen-Baerl in 1909, which was given the name Rheinkamp in 1950 . The properties for Utfort are still currently listed in the Repelen land register .

Utfort town hall

Until the end of the 19th century, only a few farms and their agriculture were the basis of the livelihood for the residents, but this changed with the start of coal mining. Coal mining in Hochstraß , which belonged to Moers from 1906, was started by the Rheinpreußen colliery as early as 1904 . From 1900 the construction of the shaft V of this mine in Utfort began. With coal mining from 1905, the age of industry began directly in the area of the Repelen mayor. The result was a sharp increase in population. In 1900 there were still 2,387 residents in the entire municipality of Repelen, this had risen to 4,715 by 1909. By merging the mayor's offices Repelen and Baerl in 1910 to form the entire municipality of Repelen-Baerl , the necessary adaptation of the infrastructure was made easier. In addition to the construction of houses and streets, a new central town hall in Utfort was built for the new community at the end of Rathausallee in Utfort from 1910 to 1912. This led to an upgrading and increasing settlement in this area.

From 1945

The first decades after the war were characterized by a strong economic upswing, which had a solid economic base for the greater Moers area thanks to the mines with coal production. The result was increased housing construction, which in Utfort led less to larger rental housing estates and more to private homes. Until 1975, Utfort belonged to the Repelen-Baerl commune, which was renamed Rheinkamp in 1950. After the municipal reform of 1975 with the division of Rheinkamp into two main areas, Utfort remained in the new Rheinkamp district of Moers. This district was largely identical to the historic municipality of Repelen before 1909. However, the areas of Baerler Busch and Meerbeck now also belonged to Rheinkamp.

After incorporation into the city of Moers, the districts were divided into so-called residential areas and restructured. Roads, railway embankments and natural barriers such as streams were chosen as internal boundaries between the residential areas. This resulted in deviations from the historical cadastre. The following limits were set for the Utfort residential area (only rough information):

  • in the south: Rheurdter Strasse
  • in the east: Moers / Rheinberg embankment
  • in the west: Repelener Straße to the north behind Kampstraße and then Moersbach
  • in the north: from Moersbach across the "Umspanngelände" to Rathausallee

According to the new eastern boundary, the area in the area of the former Rheinpreußen 5/9 colliery no longer belongs to Utfort, as it did before the municipal reform, but to Meerbeck.

With the end of coal mining, the fundamentals for the Lower Rhine economy deteriorated. The demolition of parts of the colliery's facilities, as far as they were needed for coal extraction, freed up areas with buildings for the settlement of medium-sized companies. At the end of the 2nd millennium, the Eurotec Technology Park was built on the former site of Zeche Rheinpreußen 5/9, but it now belongs to Meerbeck and not Utfort.

Until the end of the 20th century, the area south of Kampstrasse in Utfort was only sparsely populated, but this area is now also largely built up to Tervoortstrasse with homes and condominiums. Only a few remaining areas of the former use for agriculture currently exist. These are mainly to the west of Moersbach and north of Rheudter Strasse. Of the original larger forest areas in Utfort, there are various smaller remaining areas as a larger area, only the southwestern area from Moersbach to Haus Tervoort , which as a former castle park has so far survived the conversion into building land.

Current

With the integration of Rheinkamp into Moers, the town hall in Utfort on Rathausallee became superfluous as an administrative center and was an office location for various municipal departments until the beginning of the 2010s. From around 2010 the listed building was empty. After various utilization plans had been discussed, the building with a park-like area to the south of it was sold to the project developer “Zumwinkel” at the end of 2015. He plans to renovate the building and build a total of 70 social housing and a doctor's practice on the site. Around a third of the planned 5000 m² total living space will be in the old town hall. For the other area, three and a half storey new buildings with a children's playground will be built on the previously undeveloped site to the south. Part of the current open space will be retained as a park. The originally planned completion date for the project at the time of purchase was 2018, but could not be realized. In a press release from the city of Moers from the beginning of May 2017, it was announced that the construction plans are currently being examined by the responsible authorities and that work can be expected to start in the foreseeable future.

religion

Evangelical Church Utfort

As in the entire county of Moers, the population in Repelen and the associated peasantry had changed to the Reformed faith from the middle of the 16th century. Until the start of coal mining in the Repelen area and thus in Utfort, the village church in Repelen was the center of the Protestant community. With the strong increase in the population from 1900 onwards, it made sense to set up an independent evangelical community in Utfort. A new church was built on a plot of land near the new town hall of Repelen-Baerl, which was built a little later and was donated to the community by the owner of the "House Tervoort" Louis Liebrecht , which was consecrated in 1906. The conversion to the independent Evangelical parish in Utfort took place in 1927. This parish is currently responsible for Utfort, Eick-Ost and Bornheim.

The number of Catholic Christians in Utfort was very small until 1900. In 1834 only 3 of 80 residents were Catholic. With the start of coal mining, the proportion of the Catholic population also grew. Until 1961 the Catholics belonged to the Catholic parish of St. Barbara in Meerbeck. After the inauguration of a new church in 1963 and the establishment of the cath. Parish of St. Ida in Rheinkamp-Eick In 1964, this became responsible for the Catholics in Utfort.

Attractions
