history

Fire station Scherpenberg

With one exception, there is no evidence of a settlement of Scherpenberg before the Middle Ages. Only on Scherpenberger Straße was a pot unearthed, which indicates a grave site from the early Iron Age .

Scherpenberg cannot be found on older maps. The rural district had developed like Hochstraß in the Birck district . Hochstraß has been traceable since the second half of the 18th century. At that time, a rural community was formed from the Hochstraß peasantry with the hamlets of Westerbruch and Scherpenberg. In 1800, Hochstraß was merged with the rural communities of Asberg, Fünderich, Hülsdonk, Vinn and Schwafheim with the city of Moers by the French to form Mairie Meurs (Moers) in the Département de la Roer . This inevitably also affected the Westerbruch and Scherpenberg farmers.

After the end of the French era on the Lower Rhine, Hochstraß and its associated farmers became part of the Homberg community . The Hochstraß sub-community was later spun off from this collective community. In a list from 1901, the hamlets of Westerbruch, Moerserheide and Scherpenberg belonged to the Hochstraß community. During the municipal reform of April 1, 1906, Scherpenberg was incorporated into Moers as part of Hochstraß together with Asberg, Hülsdonk, Schwafheim and Vinn.
