history

A row grave field with 233 excavated grave sites was found near the village. It originated in the 7th century AD.

The place Fagana is mentioned for the first time in the 10th century in an exchange document from Freising with Bishop Lantpert . In 1085 the noble family of the Lords of Vagen appears for the first time in the documents. The place name is derived from this Bavarian noble family of the Fagana .

In the High Middle Ages, Vagen belonged to the Falkensteiner rulership when Count Siboto II von Weyarn moved his center of power to the Neuburg above the town . Vagen was one of the ten Fronhöfe administered here . The castle fell into disrepair from the 14th century. The remains were used as building material for the Weihenlinden pilgrimage church built in 1653 . Today nothing can be seen of the former castle. Only a striking vantage point, with a view far over the Mangfall valley, testifies to the once strategically favorable position.

In the 16th and 17th centuries, the bourgeois family of Hafner from Munich became the most important landlord in Vagen. The oldest demonstrable Haberfeld drift took place in 1717. Franz Anton Vogt bought half of the Hofmark in 1750 and built his retirement home, the castle, in Vagen in 1768. His descendant, the castle and estate owner Max Vogt, sold the Hofmark in the 19th century. After several changes of ownership, Count Heinrich Boos-Waldeck acquired the run-down property in 1872. He increased the economy by buying back land and had the castle rebuilt, renovated and expanded. The palace chapel was rebuilt and inaugurated on October 25, 1875 by Archbishop Gregor von Scherr .

With the second parish edict on May 17, 1818, Vagen became a political parish that also included the town of Westerham. On July 1, 1972, the parishes of Vagen and Feldkirchen were merged to form the new parish of Feldkirchen-Westerham. The Bad Aibling district was dissolved on the same day. Thus the new municipality was assigned to the district of Rosenheim .

Coat of arms history

The heraldic symbol of the falcon indicates the sex of the Counts of Neuburg – Falkenstein . The rafter is reminiscent of the noble family of those from Westerham. The Mangfall river , which characterizes the landscape, is represented in the wave bar.

In 1964, the then mayor Max Reitner introduced the coat of arms in the municipality of Vagen. The place was merged with Feldkirchen in 1972 through the regional reform. The new municipality of Feldkirchen-Westerham took over the Vagen coat of arms unchanged in 1977.

Attractions

Parish Church of the Assumption

As early as 1315, Vagen was mentioned as a subsidiary church of Götting in the "Conradin register". The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary was a curate church until 1875 and has been a parish church since 1958. As the oldest part, the tower bears witness to a previous Romanesque building. At the beginning of the 16th century the nave was renewed and enlarged in the Gothic style. The portal is evidence of this. In 1746 Pastor Stephan Mayr from Götting had the church redesigned in the baroque style. A votive picture on the east side of the sacred building reminds of this. The main altar of the church shows the apocalyptic woman, St. George and St. Sebastian. From the side altars the visitor will find St. Anna and St. Barbara. In 1936 the paintings on the ceiling were redesigned. In 1984 Norbert Krieger from Retzbach gave the church a new organ. Noteworthy are the cross with Pieta in the nave, the mercy seat , St. Rasso, St. Valentin and opposite the entrance the Madonna and Child.

Castle in Vagen with a chapel

A castle was built in Vagen as early as 1768. Anton Vogt, who as Rheinstein-Tattenbachscher Grafschaftspfleger von Valley and leaseholder of the brewery bought half of Hofmark Vagen, built his retirement home with the castle. In the large castle garden he created water cascades with the help of the Goldbach . In the 1870s, Count Heinrich von Boos-Waldeck expanded the castle considerably. In this state, the castle is completely preserved and inhabited. In the period from 1989 to 1990, the palace was extensively renovated by the owner Karl Michael Freiherr von Aretin and the architects Ritt & Waldburg in Munich under the supervision of Carsten von Waffenstein. The area is closed to the public and cannot be visited.

Old Forge

As early as the middle of the 15th century there was a documented blacksmith, hammer and weapon smithy, which has largely been preserved to this day. It was powered by the water power of the Goldbach.

societies

The associations form the basis for functioning village coexistence. Their activities contribute to the preservation of traditional cultural assets and promote community. There are numerous associations in Vagen, the names of which reveal the wide range of interests:
