Valentin von Eickstedt (Major General)
Valentin von Eickstedt (born December 13, 1669 in Hohenholz , Swedish Pomerania , † September 17, 1718 in Frederiksborg ) was a major general in the Danish-Norwegian service.
Family and origin
Eickstedt's parents were Alexander Ernst von Eickstedt zu Hohenholz (1634–1693) and his second wife Dorothea Sophie, nee. von Suckow (* 1644; † 1676 at the latest). After marrying Elisabeth von der Osten from Schildberg, Valentin von Eickstedt married Edele Cathrine Kaas (1679–1742), daughter of the chief commissioner and later mayor in Trondheim, Hans Kaas zu Hastrup (approx. 1640) in the Copenhagen Soltskirke on June 4, 1708 –1700) and Sophie Amalie, b. Bielke (1650-1703). The marriage had three children:
- Frederikke Louise von Eickstedt (1711–1755)
- Sofie Dorothea von Eickstedt (1714–?)
- Hans Henrick von Eickstedt (1715–1801), officer and member of the Council of State
Life
In 1684 von Eickstedt joined Danish-Norwegian services as an ensign . In 1685 he was appointed second lieutenant , 1688 captain , 1693 major , 1697 lieutenant colonel . In 1700 von Eickstedt received the character of a colonel and in 1701 the real rank of a colonel. In the same year he left to take over the newly established Guards Grenadier Corps. In 1692 and 1696 von Eickstedt took part in campaigns abroad and in 1700 he took part in the siege of Tönning . In 1704 von Eickstedt became adjutant general to the king. In 1706 he was promoted to brigadier and in 1708 to major general. From 1709 to 1710 von Eickstedt took part in the campaign in Skåne as the oldest major general of the infantry, where he was assigned many different tasks. Despite his personal bravery, he was not very suitable as a troop leader: he lacked self-confidence, the will to take responsibility and the determination. After the battle of Helsingborg , in which von Eickstedt led the main strength of the foot troops, he resigned in favor of Franz Joachim von Dewitz . In May of the same year, von Eickstedt replaced Christian von Lente as Chief War Secretary and became a member of the General Commissioner. After leaving the military leadership in 1717, he became a bailiff in Frederiksborg .
