Vaugneray is a village and a commune déléguée in the French commune of the same name Vaugneray with 5,467 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Rhône department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region .
With effect from January 1, 2015, Vaugneray was merged with the municipality of Saint-Laurent-de-Vaux to form the Commune nouvelle of the same name called Vaugneray . The former municipalities have the status of a Commune déléguée in the new municipality . The administrative headquarters are in Vaugneray. The former municipality of Vaugneray belonged to the Arrondissement of Lyon and the Canton of Vaugneray .
geography
The place is about 20 kilometers west of Lyon and nestles against the range of hills of the Lyonnais with a view of the settlement area of Lyon and the Alps. The vast territory is mainly used for agriculture and is surrounded by forest areas.
The La Luère (714 m) and Malval (732 m) passes offer direct access to the Brévenne valley .
The Black Valley ( French val noir ) is from Yzeron formed and located between the towns of Yzeron , Saint-Laurent-de-Vaux and Brindas . The valley is so called by the locals because the forest makes it appear very gloomy.
The economy is based on retail trade, handicrafts and agriculture (livestock, viticulture, horticulture).
history
From 1886 to 1954 the town was connected to Lyon by the Vaugneray railway. The train station was located near the "Maison Blanche".

Partnerships
Vaugneray has been on friendly terms with the villages of the municipality of Berghin (judet Alba) in Romania since 1989 , established by the Association intercommunale Amitié et solidarité en ouest lyonnais .

special locations
Vaugneray has a historical architectural legacy: castles, mansions, houses from the 17th and 18th centuries and dwellings that partly date back to the high Middle Ages.
There are two castles in Vaugneray:
- The castle of Bénévent near the center, built in the 14th century, modified in the 16th and 19th centuries
- Hoirieu Castle on the "Route d'Yzeron". Here you can find remains of the foundation wall from 1200; it was remodeled in the 14th century.
Church life
The Saint-Antoine church was built between 1862 and 1865 from local granite ( French : Vaugnerite ). It belongs to the parish of Saint-Alexandre of West Lyon.
Cultural institutions
Vaugneray has a theater and a cinema. Every two years, the municipality organizes the “ ART'scène ” festival , an international stage arts event. As part of the Festival in the Valley (fr: festival inter'val), the "Melting Potage Festival" (fr: festival Melting Potage), a festival against racism in the Lyonnais , takes place here every year .
Le Griffon Theater is a new 200-seat hall that moved into the old cinema in January 2007. A cultural season is proposed by the MJC ; However, the hall can also be used by other organizers (clubs, schools, companies, etc.)

- According to tradition, Francis I is said to have lived here on the occasion of a hunt with a farmer in the hamlet of Milonnière without revealing himself.
