Veggieday

Veggieday in Israel.

A veggie day , veggie day or vegetarian day ( English meat free day ) is a day of the week on which municipalities and public or private institutions undertake not to offer dishes with meat in their canteen kitchens , but only vegetarian food.

background

Justifications

For vegetarian or vegan days in canteens, environmental and nutritional reasons are given, such as the problems of animal production that are relevant from these two aspects . The proponents argue that feeding animals to produce meat is energetically and economically inefficient, since the feed (e.g. grain , soy , maize , rice ) could feed many more people if processed and consumed directly, or, viewed differently, cultivated areas ingestion that was lost to people's already inadequate nutrition . In addition, the intensive livestock farming and in particular the bringing factory farming a strong impact on the environment , and. a. due to high water and land consumption, as well as emissions that also affect the climate .

Furthermore, attention is drawn to the risk of epidemics , which would be increased by factory farming and which is more difficult to control, as well as the massive use of antibiotics in animal husbandry , which can promote resistant bacterial strains. In addition, health aspects of a meat-rich diet are cited and, on the basis of nutritional physiology, assumed or claimed by vegetarians benefits for human health through plant-based diets are emphasized.

Most Veggieday initiatives distance themselves from an ethical argument for veganism or vegetarianism. Veggieday initiatives are therefore more likely to be found in environmental movements than in animal ethical movements. Veggieday initiators from the New Animal Welfare often share fundamental, ethical motives of vegetarianism, but do not carry them into the political discourse, or they are very subordinate .

Christian Rauffus, managing director of Rügenwalder Mühle and thus one of the largest local sausage producers in Germany, supported the proposal for “Veggie Day”. The Süddeutsche Zeitung cited an interview with Rauffus with the Handelsblatt. According to the SZ, there is a trend towards flexitarianism , many people want to eat meat in moderation and with a clear conscience, and vegetarian food is also becoming increasingly popular. In view of the shrinking meat market, the group plans to offer meat-free products such as soy schnitzel in the future.

weekday

Monday or Thursday is suggested as the "veggie day". In contrast, in Christianity Friday is already traditionally introduced as a weekly fish or pastry day, especially in the Catholic Church and the Orthodox Churches. The Protestant denominations (again) include fasting in religious practice, with resistance to uniform fasting requirements such as in the case of Zürcher Wurstessen as part of the Reformation history.

In the predominantly Protestant United States, meatless Monday is preferred.

Implementations

Germany

In Germany, the campaign for the introduction of a veggie day is sponsored by the Vegetarian Association Germany (ProgVeg). ProVeg partners include the Albert Schweitzer Foundation , Peta , Vier Pfoten and the Global Marshall Plan .

In January 2010, Bremen was the first city in Germany to introduce meat-free Thursday. The project was implemented by the Bremen Community Foundation and is supported by the red-green Senate . Support for Veggie Day was explicitly included in the 2011 Bremen coalition agreement between the SPD and Bündnis90 / Die Grünen . In mid-2010, the Greens requested the introduction of a veggie day in Bremen's large kitchens and canteens with an application to the citizenship.

Since then, several city councils have decided to join the initiative. The support of large kitchens and restaurants in Münster , Marburg and Göttingen is particularly broad . Universities in particular have introduced a large number of vegetarian days.

In the election campaign leading up to the 2013 federal election , the Greens' three-year call to introduce Veggie Day as the standard caused excitement and outrage in the ranks of the Union parties and the FDP, as well as in parts of the press, and was also referred to as the laughing stock of the election campaign . The response was particularly great in social networks; the topic quickly became a campaign hit. The Veggie Day was used to portray the Greens as "hostile to pleasure", "spoilers" or "party of prohibitions". Proponents pointed out that, even according to the Greens, the proposal could not and should not be legally enforced. In particular, the Veggieday was promoted by Katrin Göring-Eckardt and Renate Künast in the run-up to the 2013 federal election . In addition to a flawed election campaign, the veggie day demand was also repeatedly blamed by leading Greens for the dramatically poorer voter approval since 2011 compared to the survey results. Critical voices came from Baden-Württemberg in particular , for example from Silke Krebs , Boris Palmer and Winfried Kretschmann , in the Schwäbische Zeitung , among others . “Let's take 'Veggie Day'. Patronizing is also expressed with anglicism and at the same time infantilized. Something like that gets on people's nerves. "

Other states

Since May 2009 there has been an official “vegetarian Thursday” in the Belgian city of Ghent , on which the vegetarian menu is in the foreground in canteens and restaurants . The city administration provided personnel and financial support, around a hundred restaurants volunteered. Other Belgian cities such as Hasselt and Mechelen have joined the initiative.

Denmark is one of the countries in Europe with the highest per capita meat consumption and a low percentage of vegetarians. The alternative party , which advocates ecological change, also campaigned for a vegetarian day in the 2015 election campaign.

In Israel there is Meatless Monday (Monday).

At Swissveg , Thursday has been defined as a veggie day . This campaign is supported by various people and cities in Switzerland .

In Singapore there is Meatless Monday (Monday) and VeggieThursday (Thursday), which is organized by the Vegetarian Association (Singapore).

In the United States, the campaign for a vegetarian day comes from The Monday Campaigns Inc. Washington, DC , San Francisco and Los Angeles are among the cities in the USA that have also decided to introduce a meatless weekday. In the United States, a meat-free Monday was already introduced as Meatless Monday as part of wartime rationing in World War I and World War II. Because of the campaigns led by Herbert Hoover at the US Food Administration 1917-1919, he became very well known.

In other countries, cities like São Paulo and Cape Town have an unofficial meatless weekday.

The Norwegian Armed Forces introduced a Meatless Monday (Monday) in November 2013 . In the press releases it is emphasized that the measure does not serve to save money, but to “fight against climate change”.
