Vincent Gerard Cardinal Nichols (born November 8, 1945 in Crosby , Lancashire (now Merseyside ), United Kingdom ) is Archbishop of Westminster and Chairman of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of England and Wales .

Life

Vincent Nichols was sent to Rome to study at the English College in 1963 . He graduated from the Pontifical Gregorian University with a degree in Catholic theology . On his return to England acquired Nichols at the University of Manchester the Master of Arts with a thesis on the theology of John Fisher .

Priest in the Archdiocese of Liverpool

Vincent Nichols received the sacrament of ordination for the Archdiocese of Liverpool on November 21, 1969 . Nichols served as a priest in St. Anne's Parish in the Liverpool borough of Toxteth . Vincent Nichols became Vice Chancellor in the Ordinariate of the Archdiocese of Liverpool in 1979. In 1980 he became director of the Upholland Northern Institute for Adult Education . Nichols was elected General Secretary of the Bishops' Conference of England and Wales in 1983.

Auxiliary Bishop at Westminster

November 5, 1991 appointed him Pope John Paul II. To the titular of Othona and Auxiliary Bishop in Westminster . He received his episcopal ordination on January 24, 1992, the Archbishop of Westminster, Basil Cardinal Hume OSB , in Westminster Cathedral ; Co- consecrators were the Archbishop of Liverpool , Derek Worlock , and the Bishop of East Anglia , Alan Charles Clark . His motto is Fortis ut mors dilectio ("Strong as death is love"), which comes from the Song of Songs ( Hld 8,6  EU ).

As auxiliary bishop, Vincent Nichols was responsible for north London . In 1998, Nichols was elected Chair of the Department for Catholic Education and Formation of the Bishops' Conference of England and Wales and Chair of the Catholic Education Service . In November 1998 he was a participant in the Synod of Bishops for Oceania .

Vincent Nichols was diocesan administrator of the Archdiocese of Westminster during the vacancy following the death of Basil Cardinal Hume on June 17, 1999 . As such, he directed the exequies for the deceased. In September 1999 Vincent Nichols took part in the Synod of Bishops for Europe.

Archbishop of Birmingham

On February 15, 2000, Pope John Paul II appointed him Archbishop of Birmingham . The inauguration took place on March 29, 2000 at Saint Chad's Cathedral in Birmingham .

Archbishop of Westminster / Primate

On April 3, 2009 Pope Benedict XVI appointed him . to the Archbishop of Westminster and thus to the Roman Catholic Primate of England and Wales . The inauguration took place on May 21, 2009 at Westminster Cathedral. On April 30, 2009 he was also elected President of the Bishops' Conference of England and Wales .

cardinal

In the consistory of February 22, 2014, Pope Francis accepted him as a cardinal priest with the titular church Santissimo Redentore e Sant'Alfonso in Via Merulana in the College of Cardinals .

Other offices

On October 8, 2016, he was elected Vice-President of the Council of European Bishops' Conferences. Until then he was responsible for the council for catechesis , schools and universities .
