Vlastimil Brodský (born December 15, 1920 in Hrušov , † April 20, 2002 in Slunečná ) was a Czech film and television actor.

life and work

Vlastimil Brodský was born in 1920 in Hrušov, the son of a stage actress. He was enthusiastic about acting at an early age and while still at school he took his first lessons from Emil František Burian , who later gave him his first engagement at his theater at the age of 19 . He worked here until 1940, when the avowed communist Burian was arrested. He then moved to the (semi-legal) Větrník Theater, played at the Prague City Theater and the Army Theater, before rejoining the ensemble around EF Burian in 1945. From 1948 to 1990 he had a long-term theater engagement at the Prague Theater in the Vineyards and was also a guest at the National Theater .

He has worked as an actor in film since 1946, and in major roles since the mid-1950s. He often appeared in children's and fairytale films, such as the popular TV series Pan Tau , or later in the series The Visitors . His greatest success, which made him internationally known, was the title role of the Jewish buffer baker in the Oscar -nominated film Jakob the Liar by Frank Beyer . For this role he was awarded the Silver Bear at the Berlinale 1975 and the GDR National Prize. In the GDR he appeared a second time for the television comedy Aber Doktor alongside Agnes Kraus in front of the camera and even in old age still played in many film and television productions.

Brodský was married twice, most recently to another great star of Czech film, Jana Brejchová , from 1964 to 1980. His son from his first marriage, Marek Brodský , is an actor and writer. His daughter Tereza Brodská is also a well-known actress.

Brodský, who was seriously ill with cancer, suffered from depression . He died of suicide at the age of 81 in his weekend home in Slunečná . He was buried next to his parents in the parish cemetery. In Prague a street was named in his honor.
