In 1949 the girls' high school became the second middle school. From 1975 she received a direction in the humanities. In 1993, the name of Vytautas Žemkalnis was given by Panevėžys City Council. In 1995 the school became a high school. It is located on the thighs of the Nevėžis loop .
particularities
A folk dance ensemble formed at the school very early on. The folk dance ensemble was later called "Kanapėlė". Kanapėlė not only participates in city events, but also in national and international festivals. For this reason, the Tautinių šokių festivali, which takes place every two years and is attended by national and international folk dance ensembles, was launched in 2005 on the occasion of the school's 100th birthday. The aim of the tradition is to promote folk dance and thus the awareness of national self-esteem and self-confidence.
In 2016 there were massive problems with the hygiene regulations at the school, which were not adhered to and which were reported on.
