To the east rises the Krahberg ( 338  m ), in the south the Taubenberg ( 458  m ) and the Hornsberg ( 402  m ), to the southwest the Schafberg ( 348  m ) and in the west the Frühlingsberg ( 353  m ).

description

The Wachtberg is a volcanic elevation that arose from a basalt breakthrough through a clod of Rosenhainer granite, a light variety of granodiorite. In 1893 horizontally lying basalt columns could still be seen in the northern part of the summit and a basalt sheaf bent over to the south in the southern part. The Wachtberg summit was largely dismantled by the quarry. Today there is a pond in the former quarry. Both types of rock are clearly recognizable in the quarry area.

Despite its low height, the hilltop, surrounded by agricultural land, offers a wide view of the Spree valley, the Beiersdorfer water and the bottom of the water in all directions in front of the panorama of the second and third mountain ranges of the Lausitzer Bergland . The green marked hiking trail leading over the northern slope from Uhyst am Taucher to Äußerstniedersohland provides a wide view of the Spreetal with the Sohland reservoir as far as the calf stones .

history

In 1778 there was a battle between Prussian and Austrian hussars on the Wachtberg during the War of the Bavarian Succession . The miles sheet shows that there was a memorial column on the Wachtberg at the beginning of the 19th century.

At the end of the 19th century, the owners of the Taubenheim manor began to mine the nepheline basalt on the Wachtberg. In the first half of the 20th century, a gravel works was laid on the Neue Weg, which runs south of the summit. In the 1930s, the Taubenheim basalt works were shut down. The lower part of the quarry then filled with water over time.

Area natural monument

The entire wooded summit area was placed under protection as an area natural monument. A remnant of the original star chickweed, pedunculate oak and hornbeam forest has been preserved around the quarry . In it are copies of small-leaved lime , black cherry , maple , elm , white elm , hazel , blackthorn , hawthorn , dog rose , Lederblättrigen Rose and Cross mandrel . Soil flora consists mainly of the lungwort , spring grass pea , Bingelkraut , Zimterdbeeren , pigeons cranesbill , Arabis glabra , Wirbeldost , Heilziest , forest grass pea , milk vetch and Heidelabkraut . 24 species of heteroptera , including the rare Charagochilus gyllenhalii , Dichrooscytus intermedius , Psallus diminutus and Oncotylus punctipes , were found on the site.

Headless rider

Around the Wachtberg there is a legend of a rider without a head, according to which an imperial lieutenant who fell there is guarding a buried war chest.
