Walter Arnold (politician, 1882)

Walter Friedrich August Arnold (born March 23, 1882 in Nordhausen ; † June 19, 1933 in Gera ) was an independent local politician, Mayor of Mühlhausen from 1920 to 1925 and Mayor of Gera from 1925 to 1933.

Life

After graduating from high school Walter Arnold studied in Geneva , Berlin and Halle law . During his studies he became a member of the Association of German Students in Halle . After completing his studies, he worked in various positions at the municipality of Nordhausen. In 1913 he became a magistrate's assistant, later a city councilor in Landsberg an der Warthe .

Arnold took part in the First World War as a reserve officer and was a captain and regimental adjutant until the end of the war .

In 1919 he was elected second mayor of Landsberg, in 1920 mayor of Mühlhausen and on September 1, 1925, he was elected mayor of Gera by the city council. In September 1932, Arnold and was Assistant Secretary of Gera, on leave from the appointed by the Nazi state government of Thuringia with extensive powers State Commissioner for Gera. City council meetings were no longer possible without the consent of the state commissioner, and Gera's local self-government was practically eliminated.

Walter Arnold was retired on April 1, 1933 and replaced by the National Socialist Walter Kießling . He died only a few months later in the sanatoriums in the Milbitz district .
