Wálter Herrmann (born June 26, 1979 in Santa Fe , Argentina ) is an Argentine basketball player of German descent. As a national player, Herrmann became Olympic champion in 2004 and played from 2002 to 2010, interrupted by three years in the US professional league NBA , in the top Spanish division ACB , where he was MVP in 2003 and Spanish champion with Unicaja Málaga in 2006. After 2010, Herrmann was still active in South America, temporarily interrupted by protracted injuries, where he won the Intercontinental Cup in 2014 with the Brazilian club CR Flamengo and became Brazilian champion in 2015. Most recently Herrmann won their first Argentine championship with the club from San Lorenzo.

Player career

The 2.06 m tall forward began his career at Olìmpia de Venado Tuerto. At the age of 20 he already had an average of 13.2 points. The move to Atenas Córdoba followed , with whom he won the championship in 2002 and was elected MVP of the final series.

Due to his strong performance, the Spanish first division club Baloncesto Fuenlabrada signed him . In his first year as a rookie, he became the league's top scorer and league MVP . Then he signed a contract with Unicaja Málaga, one of the most prestigious clubs in Europe , in 2003 .

After the previous sporting successes, setbacks in private life should follow in 2003. The day Herrmann signed the contract with Málaga, he learned that his fiancée had died in a car accident. It later turned out that she wasn't the only one harmed. His mother and younger sister also lost their lives in the accident. Badly hit, he considered retiring his career, but rejected the idea. A year later, after winning the South American Championship, where he scored 38 points and 11 rebounds in the final, his father died of a heart attack. Despite this new blow, Herrmann decided to go to the Olympic Games in Athens with the Argentine team . The team reached the final and ultimately won the gold medal.

At club level, he moved to the NBA to the Charlotte Bobcats before the 2006/07 season . At the beginning Herrmann only got a few minutes played, a total of only 6 in the first 17 games. In March 2007 he got a place on the starting line-up due to injuries. He took his chance and was voted Rookie of the Month for March. He finished his first year in the NBA with an average of 9.2 points per game and was elected to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team .

During the 2007/08 season , Herrmann was sent to the Detroit Pistons (along with Primož Brezec in exchange for Nazr Mohammed ) . There he played until the end of the 2008/2009 season. In July 2009 he signed a contract for 2 years until the end of the 2010/2011 season with Caja Laboral in Spain.
