Wayne is a city in Wayne County in Michigan , United States with 19,051 inhabitants (2000).

Ford Motor Company has two production plants here that assemble the Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator and Ford Focus vehicles .

geography

The city of Wayne is bounded in the north by Glenwood Road, the western edge is formed by Hannan Road and the southern edge of the city is formed by Van Born Road. To the east, the urban area ends on Merriman Road. Wayne geographical coordinates be 42 ° 17 '  N , 83 ° 23'  W . The US Highway 12 runs from west to east on the northern edge of the metropolitan area and approximately follows the course of the Lower River Rouge .

history

Wayne was settled in the 1820s. After the Second World War , the population increased significantly, and trade and industry also increased.

The population growth came to a standstill in the 1990s, in 1990 Wayne had 19,899 inhabitants, ten years later it was 19,051. A renovation program was initiated in the city center in 2006, including a new fire station and a new police station.

The Wayne County Historical Museum features more than a hundred exhibits from the history of the city and county. It is located in a two-story building built in 1878.

Wayne is the intersection of two railway lines. On the one hand the route of the Pere Marquette Railroad (today CSX Transportation ) from Toledo to Saginaw and on the other hand the route of the Michigan Central Railroad (today Norfolk Southern ) from Detroit to Chicago. Wayne Passenger Station is closed. Two NS and CSX marshalling yards serve freight traffic.

The now closed route network of the Interurban Detroit, Jackson and Chicago Railroad (later Detroit United Railway ) also ran through Wayne .

The city operates a swimming pool and an ice rink. There are also 17 parks and playgrounds. During the summer months there is a series of concerts in the amphitheater in Goudy Park, and the Independence Day fireworks in Attwood Park.

The State Wayne Theater is visited by more than 7,000 people each month. It is owned and operated by the city. Four to six productions are offered annually, and movies are shown at the weekend.

A senior center offers services for people over 50, including free legal assistance and health checks, meals on wheels, tai chi, bingo, day trips, movie screenings, or computer classes.

At the time of the 2000 United States Census, Wayne lived in 19,051 people. The population density was 1,221.9 people per square kilometer. There were 7651 housing units at an average of 490.7 per km ². The Wayne population was 84.36% White , 11.29% Black or African American , 0.61% Native American , 1.44% Asian , 0.04% Pacific Islander , 0.43% of other races belong to and 1.82% named two or more races. 1.94% of the population declared to be Hispanic or Latino of any race.

The residents of Wayne distributed to 7373 households out of which 33.0% were living in children under 18 years of age. 45.2% of households were married, 15.7% had a female head of household without a husband, and 34.3% were not families. 28.5% of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 9.3% of all households aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 3.13.

The population was divided into 26.4% minors, 8.5% 18–24 year olds, 31.8% 25–44 year olds, 21.6% 45–64 year olds and 11.7% aged 65 and over or more. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 women there were 92.6 men. For every 100 women over the age of 18, there were 89.5 men.

The median household income in Wayne was 46,397 US dollars, and the median family income reached the level of 56,150 US dollars. The median income for men was $ 42,385, compared with $ 28,069 for women. The per capita income was $ 21,326. 9.1% of the population and 7.6% of families had an income below the poverty line , including 10.9% of minors and 9.6% of those aged 65 and over.
