Worldwide alcohol limits in road traffic

The legal regulations for driving under the influence of psychoactive substances differ from country to country. One of these differences is the limit of alcohol in the blood (also known as alcohol limit referred to) from which the drinking and driving a crime represents.

Africa

  • Eritrea : 0.3 ‰ for professional drivers, 0.5 ‰ for everyone else
  • Gambia : There is no legal restriction.
  • Kenya : There is no legal restriction.
  • Libya : There is no legal restriction.
  • Tanzania : 0.0 ‰ for professional drivers, 0.8 ‰
  • Togo : There are no legal restrictions.

Europe

  • Bosnia and Herzegovina : 0.3 ‰ for all drivers. There are exceptions for category C, CE, D and DE drivers, local public transport drivers and driving instructors. A zero alcohol limit applies to these. The same applies to drivers who are under 21 years of age or who have less than three years of driving experience.
  • Denmark : 0.5 ‰, prison sentence if the value is over 2 ‰, zero alcohol limit if someone is not driving safely.
  • Germany : For novice drivers (less than two years of driving experience or younger than 21) there is a zero alcohol limit. Otherwise the value of 0.5 ‰ applies and for professional drivers 0.3 ‰. Cyclists have a limit of up to 1.6 ‰ if this is not brought into connection with other traffic violations or accidents. From 1.6 ‰, the driver's license must be acquired again through the Medical-Psychological Examination (MPU).
  • Finland : 0.5 ‰, 1.2 ‰, (tightened). Fine or imprisonment of up to 6 months, plus a withdrawal of the driving license between one month and 5 years. A prison sentence of between two months and two years is also possible, which is usually given as a suspended sentence.
  • France : 0.5 ‰, for novice drivers (less than three years of driving experience) and bus drivers the limit of 0; 2 ‰ applies. Violation threatens a fine of 135 € and six points that put a strain on the driver's license. This can be withheld for up to three years., 0.8 ‰ (tightened, criminal offense, withdrawal of the driving license for three years, € 4,500 fine and up to two years imprisonment.)
  • Greece : 0.5 ‰ ( BAK 0.25 mg / l), reduced to 0.2 ‰ (BrAC 0.10 mg / L) for novice drivers (less than two years of driving experience), motorcyclists and professional drivers. A value above 1.1 ‰ (BAK 0.60 mg / l) is considered a serious offense and is punished with up to two years in prison and a heavy fine, as well as the withdrawal of the driver's license for six months.
  • Ireland : 0.5 ‰ or 0.2 ‰ for learner and novice drivers (under two years of driving experience), professional drivers and those who cannot show their driver's license when stopped at Garda (police). If it can be proven that you drove while drunk, there is usually a two-year driving ban and a € 1,500 fine.
  • Italy : 0.5 ‰. There is a zero alcohol limit for novice drivers (less than three years of driving experience) and professional drivers. The driving license is revoked for professional drivers, the second violation within two years or in the event of an accident.
  • Croatia : 0.5 ‰. Zero alcohol limit for drivers aged 16 to 24 and professional drivers.
  • Latvia : 0.2 ‰ for drivers with less than two years of driving experience and 0.5 ‰ for drivers with more than two years of experience.
  • Lithuania : zero alcohol limit for professional drivers and motorcyclists. 0.2 ‰ for drivers with less than two years of driving experience and 0.4 ‰ for drivers with more than two years of experience.
  • Luxembourg : 0.5 ‰. For novice drivers (less than two years of driving experience) the limit of 0.2 ‰ applies.
  • Macedonia : zero alcohol limit for professional drivers and novice drivers, 0.5 ‰ for everyone else.
  • Netherlands : 0.5 ‰, 0.2 ‰ for drivers with less than five years of driving experience (or less than seven years if the driver obtained their driving license before the age of 18).
  • Norway : 0.2 ‰. If the driver's license has been withdrawn, it is possible to apply for a new one after five years.
  • Austria : 0.5 ‰. 0.1 ‰ for drivers who have had their driving license for less than two years and drivers of vehicles over 7.5 tons.
  • Poland : 0.2 ‰ (driving ban for up to three years), 0.05% (fine set by the court, driving ban for up to 10 years, imprisonment for up to 2 years). Limits and penalties for cycling have been the same as for motorized vehicles since December 2013. Almost half of the people imprisoned for drunk driving rode bicycles.
  • Portugal : 0.5 ‰. For professional drivers and novice drivers (the first three years) a value of 0.2 ‰ applies.
  • Switzerland : 0.5 ‰, 0.1 ‰ for professional drivers and novice drivers
  • Serbia : 0.3 ‰. A zero alcohol limit applies to professional drivers, bus drivers, novice drivers and motorcyclists.
  • Slovenia : 0.5 ‰. A zero alcohol limit applies to professional drivers and novice drivers (less than 2 years of driving experience).
  • Spain : 0.5 ‰. A zero alcohol limit applies to professional drivers and novice drivers (less than 2 years of driving experience).
  • Czech Republic : 0.0 ‰
  • Ukraine : There is a zero alcohol limit.
  • Hungary : There is a zero alcohol limit.
  • Belarus : There is a zero alcohol limit.

America

North America

  • Canada : 0.8 ‰. In some provinces a limit of 0.5 ‰ applies. A zero alcohol limit applies to novice drivers and drivers between the ages of 16 and 21.
  • Mexico : 0.8 ‰
  • USA : Depending on the state, the limit is between 0.8 ‰ and 0.5 ‰.

  • Afghanistan : There is a general ban on alcohol.
  • India : The alcohol limit depends on the state, for example 0.3 in Delhi and 0.8 in West Bengal.
  • Nepal : There is a zero alcohol limit.
  • Pakistan : There is a general ban on alcohol.
  • Sri Lanka : 0.8 ‰

South East Asia

  • Brunei : There is a general ban on alcohol.
  • Indonesia : No legal restriction, but expect imprisonment in the event of an accident under the influence of alcohol.
  • Cambodia : 0.1 ‰
  • Laos : 0.5 ‰
  • Malaysia : 0.8 ‰
  • Philippines : There is a zero alcohol limit.
  • Singapore : 0.8 ‰
  • Thailand : 0.5 ‰
  • Vietnam : 0.5 ‰ for motorcyclists. A zero alcohol limit applies to all other drivers.

Middle East

  • Armenia : There is a zero alcohol limit.
  • Azerbaijan : There is a zero alcohol limit.
  • Iran : There is a zero alcohol limit.
  • Israel : 0.5 ‰
  • Jordan : 0.8 ‰
  • Kuwait : There is a general ban on alcohol.
  • Lebanon : There is no set limit, but in the event of an accident under the influence of alcohol the driver's license will be withdrawn immediately.
  • Saudi Arabia : There is a general alcohol ban.
  • Syria : There is a general alcohol ban.
  • Turkey : 0.5 ‰ for drivers of a car without a trailer, for all others a zero alcohol limit applies.
  • United Arab Emirates : There is a general alcohol ban.

Oceania

  • Australia : 0.5 ‰. There is a zero alcohol limit for novice drivers and a limit of 0.2 ‰ for professional drivers except in ACT and New South Wales.
  • New Zealand : 0.5 ‰.
