The Westerdam is a cruise ship of the Holland America Line that was commissioned in 2004 . It is the third ship of this name and belongs to the Vista class .

history

The Westerdam was built under hull number 6077 in the Fincantieri shipyard in Marghera . A fire during the equipment of the ship on October 17, 2003 delayed the completion. On April 25, 2004, the Westerdam was finally baptized in Venice . The ship's godmother was the Dutch actress Renée Soutendijk . In the same month it started the cruise service.

Incident 2011

On May 10, 2011, the Westerdam ran on ice in Yakutat Bay / Alaska south of Kluane National Park , her hull was damaged over a length of almost five meters.
On June 29, 2015, eight passengers on the ship were killed when a de Havilland Canada DHC-3 Otter booked by the shipping company for a scenic flight crashed northeast of Ketchikan .

Coronavirus 2020

After SARS-CoV-2 infections on the Diamond Princess , the authorities of several states refused to dock the Westerdam in their ports at the beginning of February 2020 because it was feared that there would also be people on board with the SARS-CoV-2 virus could have infected. There were no confirmed cases on board at this point. The ship had been on a two-week cruise between Japan and Taiwan with 1450 passengers since February 1. Both Japan and Taiwan and later Guam , the Philippines and Thailand refused to invest. It was not until February 12 that Cambodia approved the entry into Sihanoukville and the disembarkation of the passengers. A US passenger was diagnosed with the virus shortly after on her onward journey to Malaysia. Thereafter, the remaining 980 passengers and crew of the Westerdam were no longer allowed to leave the ship until they tested negative for the virus. Since in the meantime, however, in addition to the woman, another 1276 passengers had already left the ship untested and had traveled on, experts feared that the spread of the coronavirus epidemic would now be much more difficult to limit . According to media reports on February 22, the 83-year-old passenger did not suffer from Covid-19 despite previous positive tests.

Furnishing

85 percent of the cabins on board the Westerdam have a sea view, 67 percent have their own balcony. The ship has several restaurants, lounges, bars, a theater, a library with an internet café, a disco and a casino. The main dining room is called the Vista Dining Room . The equipment was modernized in April 2007 as part of the Signature of Excellence program.

A special feature of the Westerdam is the art exhibited on board, which focuses on Dutch origins in the New World . The ship's collection includes a painting of the Dutch sailing ship Halve Maen , several sculptures and statues, and an original portrait of Andy Warhol .
