Western European League 2019/2020 (dressage riding)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Western European League of the FEI Dressage World Cup 2019/2020 (FEI Dressage World Cup ™ from 2019 to 2020, Western European League) was the 35th season of the Western and Central European League of the FEI World Cup Dressage . The World Cup is the most important tournament series in the indoor season in the Western European League.

Course of the tournament series

The only change compared to the previous season was the return of the Gothenburg Horse Show as a stage of the Western European League. The World Cup final was held in Gothenburg in spring 2019. This meant that a total of eleven stages were planned for the 2019/2020 season.

All tournaments of the Western European League were advertised as CDI . They were marked with the addition -W (i.e. CDI-W) in order to identify them as World Cup tournaments. The first special stage was on October 20, 2019, the league should have ended on March 15, 2020. The qualification for the 2020 World Cup finals would have been won by the nine best riders in the Western European League and any additional participants (“extra competitors”). The “Analytics Sponsor” of the Dressage World Cup was the software manufacturer SAP .

The mode of the stages was retained: With the exception of the stage in London, the Grand Prix de Dressage served as the warm-up test for the Grand Prix Freestyle . A maximum number of participants in the Grand Prix was not specified by the World Cup regulations. The 15 best-placed participants from the Grand Prix were eligible to take part in the Grand Prix Freestyle. Only the Grand Prix Freestyle counted as a special test for the Western European League.

The exams

Herning

For the third year in a row, the World Cup Herning kicked off the Western European League. The venue for the tournament, which took place from October 16 to 20, 2019, was Jyske Bank Kasten in Herning .

Last year's winning pair, Daniel Bachmann Andersen and his stallion Zack , started the freestyle as the fifth from the start. They were the first to cross the 80 percent mark (80.485 percent, fifth place). But with this result they were only the second best Danish couple. Cathrine Dufour was the next starter with her 9-year-old Westfalen Bohemian . The gelding had already convinced at the CHIO Aachen in the summer when he was able to finish fourth in the CDIO 5 * freestyle there with over 85 percent. In Herning, the couple was able to improve again: the judges already gave ratings of 81.250% to 84.500% in the A grade. With the addition of the B grade, Dufour came in at 88.190 percent - a result that none of the following couples could beat.

Benjamin Werndl and his black gelding Daily Mirror also managed to improve their performance . Werndl, who took part in the World Cup finals for the first time in 2019, achieved a new personal best in the Grand Prix Freestyle. Daily Mirror received, among other things, grades up to 10.0 in the strong step, their final result was 84.545%. Helen Langehanenberg. who followed as the penultimate starter, finished third with Damsey FRH (83.360%). However, this decision in particular was tight, the last pair of starters came in fourth with only 0.040 percent less: Severo Jurado Lopez introduced Fiontini . The 9-year-old mare won the world championships for young dressage horses in her age group from 2015 to 2017. For the mare, the World Cup stage was only the second international tournament start at Grand Prix level.

Lyon

The second stage of the Western European Dressage World Cup was held in France, specifically at Eurexpo in Lyon . The dressage tests of the Equita Lyon tournament , which took place from October 30 to November 3, 2019, were already on the program on Thursday and Friday.

In the warm-up competition, the Grand Prix de Dressage, Charlotte Dujardin won with a two percent advantage over Isabell Werth and Jessica von Bredow-Werndl. In the World Cup Freestyle, on the other hand, the result was completely mixed up: Jessica von Bredow-Werndl and her 15-year-old mare Zaire-E made mistakes in the traversals and in the gallop change tours, which significantly lowered her A grade, an overall rating of 76.455 percent brought her seventh place. Frederic Wandres scored clear plus points with the Hanoverian Duke of Britain , especially in the B grade , with the judges placing the pair in third place with just over 80 percent.

Isabell Werth was less lucky when the starting order was drawn; she was awarded the first place in the top five from the Grand Prix. But she took her chance, with her 13-year-old Westphalian Emilio , she collected 9 and 10 grades for pirouettes, piaffes and all the requirements of the B grade, so that she was able to increase her previous year's victory rating by a good three percent. For Emilio , 87.090 percent was a new record.

Charlotte Dujardin's 10-year-old mare Freestyle , who started at the end of the test, had a hard time with the atmosphere of the Lyon hall on the day of the freestyle. Dujardin and Freestyle show a high-class freestyle, but with 83.925 percent they were well behind Werth on that day, who won with it like last year.

Stuttgart

Two stages lead the Western European League to Germany, the first of which is part of the Stuttgart German Masters . This tournament took place from November 13th to 17th, 2019 in the Hanns-Martin-Schleyer-Halle in Stuttgart.

After Judy Reynolds' ride in the Grand Prix de Dressage was unfortunate, she was given first place on the grid for the World Cup freestyle on Saturday afternoon. Here she was able to build on the usual level of performance with her gelding Vancouver K and received a score of 80.755 percent. This lead lasted the entire first half of the field, and she finished the test in sixth place. Charlotte Fry was the only non-German starter in the second half of the field. Without any real weaknesses with a constant grade level, she achieved 78.740 percent (eighth place) with her 11-year-old gelding Dark Legend .

As in Lyon, Frederic Wandres received just over 80 percent with Duke of Britain , but due to the high level of performance in Stuttgart, this was only seventh here. Helen Langehanenberg with Damsey and Dorothee Schneider with Sammy Davis jr. went straight to the start and were rated equally by the judges in terms of performance. For Langehanenberg it was just about third with 83.735 percent, Schneider came in fourth with 83.395 percent. Benjamin Werndl lost points with Daily Mirror in the right traversal, an otherwise successful freestyle brought them almost 81 percent and thus fifth.

His sister then opened the final duel as the penultimate starter: Jessica von Bredow-Werndl was able to build on her bronze medal at the European Championships with her mare Dalera , and she received a score of 88.440 percent for a harmonious freestyle that was successful in the lessons. The last couple were Isabell Werth and her black mare Weihegold . This pair also showed a freestyle at the highest level, with small mistakes Werth came in second with 87.240 percent.

Madrid

For the second time, the Western European League made a stop in the capital of Spain: The Madrid Horse Week took place from November 28th to December 1st, 2019. The indoor equestrian tournament was held in the Feria de Madrid .

With prize money of 50,000 euros, the Madrid World Cup was one of the most highly endowed World Cup stages. The fact that many of the top riders were still missing in Madrid was due to the long journey from Central Europe and above all to the Stockholm Horse Show that was taking place at the same time. As part of this CDI 5 * tournament, more than 200,000 euros in prize money were distributed in the Top Ten Final, a Grand Prix Freestyle.

After Beatriz Ferrer-Salat didn’t bring her previous year's winner, the now 18-year-old Delgado , to the start, Claudio Castilla Ruiz, who was second from last year, was the best Spanish participant in the Madrid World Cup. With just over 80 percent, he and his Lusitano chestnut stallion Alcaide secured second place again. The only German participant in the exam was Dorothee Schneider. Two weeks to Stuttgart she brought her black gelding Sammy Davis jr. at the start. The couple had a few weaknesses, but were able to convince across the exam. Schneider secured victory with a final score of over 82 percent.

Salzburg

At the beginning of December, Austria's stage in the Western European League was due: The World Cup tournament in Salzburg , the Amadeus Horse Indoors , was held from December 4th to 8th, 2019. The Grand Prix Freestyle was held on the final day from 11 a.m. in the Salzburgarena .

The Salzburg World Cup was endowed with more than 36,000 euros, with Austria and Germany making the largest numbers with four and three riders respectively. Victoria Max-Theurer achieved the best Austrian result with the 11-year-old Oldenburg Benaglio . In Herning and Stuttgart, with results of around 76 percent, they both occupied middle to lower places, but they were able to improve noticeably at the home World Cup. They came third with 78.525 percent. Just behind were Helen Langehanenberg and Annabelle with a result of 78.150 percent. The 11-year-old Holstein mare had contested her first international Grand Prix a good year earlier, and her first appearance in the Western European League followed in Salzburg.

Benjamin Werndl competed in the World Cup Freestyle with Daily Mirror , with which he had won here a year earlier. Werndl managed to trump his best result achieved in Herning again. But the victory went to Isabell Werth and the 13-year-old Westphalian Emilio with a one percent lead, as in Lyon .

London

The only evaluation test of the Western European League on the British Isles took place shortly before Christmas: The Olympia London International Horse Show was held from December 16-22, 2019 in the Olympia Grand Hall . The dressage tests were carried out on the first two days of the tournament, the Grand Prix Freestyle was on the program on the evening of December 17th.

Great Britain brought its strongest pairs together at the Olympia Horse Show in 2019 and dominated the test. In the end, the British put four pairs in the top five, and seven British riders were among the top 10 participants. Louise Anne Bell had her first start at the British World Cup stage. The rider, who was originally active in hunting, started dressage in 2011 and has represented Great Britain several times at Nations Cups in 2018 and 2019 . In the World Cup Freestyle, with her 13-year-old Into the Blue, she didn’t show any real weakness, she was consistently rated at 7th and 8th grade with 76.060 percent (ninth place).

A World Cup premiere was in London for Woodstock , a 13-year-old from Württemberg who was ridden by Gareth Hughes. Failed single exchanges lowered their grade to 76.900 percent. For the first time, Lara Butler and her 17-year-old Rubin Al Asad came in over 80 percent (fifth place with 81.540 percent). Charlotte Dujardin opened the block for the last four pairs of participants. In the previous year she finished second here with a borrowed horse, but in 2019 she was the favorite with her mare Freestyle . After her early retirement from the European Championships , Dujardin is concentrating on the World Cup with freestyle this winter . After finishing second in Lyon, the couple showed no weakness in London and were rewarded with 87.520 percent.

Carl Hester and his gelding Delicato (the "loan horse" from Dujardin 2018) were in top form, at the first tournament appearance since the unsuccessful freestyle at the European Championships they received a rating of 84.470 percent. Hester's former pupil, Charlotte Fry, who now lives in the Netherlands through his agency, brought the 10-year-old black stallion Everdale to the start. At his first Grand Prix Freestyle in seven months, a new best was achieved, over 82 percent brought third place. As the final starter, Frederic Wandres went into the arena with Duke of Britain . The previous year's winner pair was also able to set a new record, but due to the strong competition it was only enough to place fourth.

Mechelen

On the last weekend of 2019, the Mechelen World Cup stage was on the program. The tournament Jumping Mechelen - Vlaanderens Kerstjumping , which was held in the Nekkerhal, took place from December 26th to 30th as every year. The World Cup Freestyle was held on the afternoon of the tournament Sunday (December 29th).

In 2019, the starting field for the Mechelen freestyle comprised only one pair of participants from the top 30 in the world rankings. Thus new couples at Grand Prix level as well as couples from the second row had the chance to step into the foreground. The Dutch rider Thamar Zweistra was able to improve again with her stallion Double Dutch compared to London and received a final score of 77.185 percent. The 22-year-old Spaniard Juan Matute Guimón showed the best ride of the first half of the starting field. With his 13-year-old Hanoverian Quantico , he was able to improve significantly compared to his freestyle ride a week earlier in Frankfurt, both of which exceeded the 80 percent mark for the first time in a Grand Prix Freestyle. The only German starter Frederic Wandres made mistakes with his "second horse" Westminster in the two-man exchanges, 74.360 percent were only enough for tenth place.

Last year's third Maria Caetano and her Lusitano horse Coroado came in just over 80 percent in 2019, they initially took the lead. Emmelie Scholtens started as the favorite with her black Desperado . After both had already achieved a new personal best of 83.045 percent four weeks earlier in Stockholm, both were able to trump this value again in Mechelen: Among other things, with two 10 marks for the strong step they came to 85.075 percent, which brought them the clear victory .

Amsterdam

The first evaluation test in 2020 took place at the Amsterdam RAI exhibition center in Amsterdam . This was part of the Jumping Amsterdam tournament, which was held from January 23rd to 26th, 2020.

The field of participants in the World Cup Freestyle was top-class: Seven of the 15 pairs of participants were among the top 25 in the world rankings, and all the World Cup final winners from 2010 to 2019 were at the start. This was also shown in the result: eight riders achieved a result of over 80 percent with their horses.

In the first half of the starting field, Helen Langehanenberg achieved by far the best result, together with Damsey FRH she was rated 84.380 percent, and in the end she was fifth. Dorothee Schneider with Sammy Davis Jr. and Hans Peter Minderhoud with Dream Boy clearly exceeded the 80 percent mark, but were behind Langehanenberg (places seven and six). Edward Gal started the stallion Zonik in Amsterdam , with whom he only competed in two international tournaments in 2019. With 9 marks in the traversals, in a strong trot, but also in a strong walk, the couple were able to exceed their result from the European Championships and came to over 85 percent.

Isabell Werth has dominated the Amsterdam World Cup since her first appearance together with Weihegold in January 2016, winning here four times in a row. In January 2020, rider and horse were able to shine again, with over 90 percent they clearly took the lead. But this time the (fifth) victory was anything but clear: Charlotte Dujardin and her Hanoverian mare Freestyle also had no weaknesses. One judge rated Dujardin higher than Werth, in the overall result of all five judges she came to 89.505 percent.

The winners from Mechelen, Emmelie Scholtens and Desperado , made weak points in Amsterdam in the collective step and especially in the two-man exchanges, with 80.565 percent it was only eighth on that day. As the last rider, Jessica von Bredow-Werndl, her eternal "second horse" Zaire (once behind Unee , now behind Dalera ) at the start. But the now 16-year-old mare confirmed that she is now one of the best dressage horses in the world and achieved a result of over 85 percent for the second time within two months. For Zaire and her rider, this result was enough for fourth place.

Neumunster

The second German stage took place in the Holstenhallen in Neumünster : The VR Classics were held from February 13th to 16th, 2020.

The starting field from Neumünster was less international at the top - on the other hand, almost the entire championship squad from Germany was at the start. From the first half of the starting field, none of the participants surpassed the 80 percent mark, but a couple came very close: Sönke Rothenberger's gelding Santiano R was able to stand out from the Amsterdam freestyle at his fourth World Cup start (and his fifth international tournament at all) increase. In the second half of the field, Adelinde Cornelissen managed for the first time in five years to achieve a result well over 80 percent in a Grand Prix Freestyle: With individual marks from 7.0 to 9.0, she came with the 16-year-old gelding Zephyr to 82.150 percent. Helen Langehanenberg with the now 18-year-old Hanoverian stallion Damsey (85.220 percent) was rated even higher by the judges with no real weak points either.

Jessica von Bredow-Werndl and her mare Dalera had won the qualification test the day before with a lead of over three percent. The rider with her Trakehner mare was also able to shine in the world cup freestyle: Only a slightly weaker collected step depressed the grade of the task, in which the judges gave the maximum grade of 10.0 several times - overall rating 89.640 percent. Isabell Werth started right after her with the Westfalen Emilio . This pair also showed an extremely high level and they too afforded weaknesses in the assembled step. The decision to win brought the freestyle before the end of the freestyle ride a mistake at the end of the single change. As a result, Werth slipped slightly back in the rating and came to 88.450 percent.

Finally, Benjamin Werndl brought his up-and-coming Grand Prix horse, the 11-year-old Famoso, to the start. Although they had no realistic chance of victory, the test went perfectly for Werndl. His gelding coped well with the atmosphere in the rather small hall in Neumünster: The judges rated the harmonious and almost consistently good ride in the lessons with 85.165 percent and thus fourth place. For Famoso this was the first Grand Prix result over 80 percent and this freestyle was also a new record for his rider.

Gothenburg

A good ten months after the 2019 World Cup final, the penultimate World Cup stage of this Western European League season was held in Gothenburg . The Göteborg Horse Show 2020 was organized from February 19th to 23rd in the Scandinavium , the World Cup Freestyle was already on the program on the afternoon of February 22nd.

The performance of the couples in the Gothenburg Grand Prix Freestyle was very mixed. After the first seven pairs, Natalie Oldfors was in the lead with 72.755 percent. The eighth pair was also part of the weaker part of the starting field, the 19-year-old black mare Di Lapponia T , together with her rider Paulinda Friberg, achieved 74.145 percent at her last show.

After Friberg, Frederic Wandres started with his chestnut stallion Duke of Britain . With an overall score of 81.465 percent, the couple confirmed their strong seasonal performance and moved up to third place in the overall Western European League ranking. Charlotte Fry and her gelding Dark Legend presented themselves at a similar level . But weaker piaffes (average mark 6.7) let them fall just behind Wandres with 81.030 percent. Cathrine Dufour lived up to her favorite role with her now 17-year-old Cassidy . The judges rewarded her freestyle with several individual marks of 9.0 and even two 10.0 marks for the canter pirouette to the right, the overall result of 87.860 percent gave Dufour the clear lead.

The surprise couple of the tournament were the Swede Sandra Dahlin and her 14-year-old mare Ichi . Although the mare was frightened once, the couple was not too impressed by this. Especially in the gallop tour and in the piaffe passage tour, both convinced (individual grades up to 9.0), which brought them a score of 79.845 percent and thus, as in the Grand Prix de Dressage, fifth place. For Kyra Kyrklund's pupil and her horse, who had only made their Grand Prix debut in spring 2019, this was by far the best rating of their international tournament career.

The ride of Benjamin Werndl and the Daily Mirror black gelding marked the end of the Gothenburg freestyle. This couple also achieved a new top rating. So the piaffe, in which they had left points in previous tournaments, was much better in Gothenburg (average rating: 7.5). With 86.170 percent, Werndl came in second behind Cathrine Dufour.

's-Hertogenbosch (canceled)

The last evaluation test was to be carried out as part of the tournament The Dutch Masters - Indoor Brabant , which was scheduled from March 12th to 15th, 2020. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , the tournament should be held with a limited number of spectators or without spectators. A few hours before the start of the first exam, the event was then completely canceled.

Overall rating

The overall ranking was used to determine which nine riders from the states in the Western European League would have qualified for the World Cup finals. The best four placements for the overall ranking went into each rider.

Other riders from other countries could have qualified for the World Cup finals via the Western European League, provided they lived in the Western European League.

The riders also had the opportunity to collect points in the Central European League and in the North American League of the Dressage World Cup (see “others” in the table below). As the World Cup final winner of the previous season, Isabell Werth would have already been pre-qualified for the final. She was therefore unable to collect any rating points this season.

Due to the World Cup regulations, only three riders per nation would have been allowed at the World Cup finals.
