The Westliches Zwillingsköpfl (Italian officially: twin heads , Italian colloquial: Testa Gemella Occidentale ) is a rugged rock mountain in the Reichenspitz group , a mountain group in the Zillertal Alps . The summit has a height of 2835  m . It lies exactly on the border between the Austrian state of Salzburg and the Italian province of South Tyrol , which here coincides with the border between the Hohe Tauern National Park and the Rieserferner-Ahrn Nature Park . The western twin head forms the northernmost point of Italy. About 350 meters away is the 2841  m high Eastern Zwillingsköpfl , to which it is connected by an east-west running ridge. The western summit was first climbed on July 10, 1895 by the first editor of the Nietzsche archive, Fritz Koegel from Constance, and the mountain guide Franz Hofer.

Location and surroundings

The western Zwillingsköpfl lies on the eastern main ridge of the Zillertal , which describes an arch arched to the north. The Klockerkarkees glacier stretches north of the two heads and is divided in two by the north ridge sent out by the western Zwillingsköpfl. Neighboring mountains are located in the west, separated by the Klockerkarscharte , at an altitude of 2807  m , the Klockerkarkopf ( 2911  m ) and in the southeast after the eastern Zwillingsköpfl the 2869  m high Steinkarspitze . To the north the area slopes down to the upper Krimmler Achental , to the south to the Ahrntal . The closest settlement is the village of Kasern in the southwest , about 7 kilometers as the crow flies . The north located Krimml is a good 14 km away.

Tourist development

The Krimmler Tauernhaus for climbs from the north and the Birnlückenhütte ( Rifugio Tridentina ) for the Lausitzer Weg, which runs south, form the base for ascent of the western Zwillingsköpfl . The path from the north leads over the Klockerkarkees and the north ridge to the summit. From the south, the increase is carried out by the south lies the Glockenkarkopf Kar south of Glockenkarkopf up to the Klockerkarscharte and over the west ridge to the summit. Both routes require UIAA grade III climbing skills on the summit ridges .
