The White House Correspondents' Association ( WHCA ) is the association of the White House Press Corps , the journalists who report on the White House and the US President .

history

The WHCA was founded by journalists on February 25, 1914 in response to an unsubstantiated rumor that a United States Congress committee would choose which journalists would attend President Woodrow Wilson's press conferences .

The WHCA operates independently from the White House. The tasks of the WHCA include the accreditation process , contact with the President, as well as the seating arrangements and the equipment of the rooms in the White House in which the press conferences take place.

management

Once a year, the WHCA elects four board members and five supervisory boards from among its members.

White House Correspondents' Dinner

Since 1920, the WHCA has hosted a dinner that has become a tradition and usually takes place in the presence of the US President and his Vice President. Since Calvin Coolidge in 1924, 15 US presidents have attended at least one WHCA dinner. It takes place at the Washington Hilton , on the evening of the last Saturday in April, around 100 days after the inauguration of a US president in the corresponding years .

Although women were also members, until 1962 only men were allowed to attend the dinner. It was Helen Thomas who urged President John F. Kennedy to make his attendance at the dinner contingent on women being admitted.

Since 1983, the keynote speaker is usually a comedian who the president and his government skin into the pan .

The dinner is a benefit event to enable gifted journalism students to receive a scholarship .

The dinners in 1930 were canceled (death of former President William Howard Taft ); 1942 after the USA entered World War II; 1951 because of " uncertain world situation " (according to President Harry S. Truman ). In 1981 Ronald Reagan was unable to attend the dinner because he had not fully resumed official business after the attack on him . He sent greetings by phone.

The current US President Donald Trump announced on February 25, 2017 on Twitter that he would not attend the dinner in 2017, instead he drove to Harrisburg to give a speech in front of supporters. Again in 2018, Trump did not attend the dinner and instead held an event in Michigan . The President said he did not want to be stuck in a room with representatives of the fake news . In his absence, the appearance of comedian Michelle Wolf attracted media attention in advance.
