Wilhelm Karl Bauer (born April 21, 1819 in Hersfeld , † August 22, 1890 in Stettin ) was a Prussian major general .

Life

Wilhelm was a son of the Elector General of Hesse, Philipp Bauer (1775-1851) and his wife Henriette, née von Lengerke (1790-1875). His brothers Karl (1816–1896) and Georg (1823–1803) also became Prussian major general.

Military career

Bauer attended high school and the cadet house in Kassel . On December 23, 1838 he was transferred to the 2nd Infantry Regiment of the Electorate of Hesse and at the end of May 1839 he was promoted to secondary lieutenant . From mid-November 1843 to early July 1846, Bauer was active in the 1st (body) infantry regiment . He was then transferred back to the 2nd Infantry Regiment and from the end of October 1847 to the end of August 1849 he was employed as an adjutant of the 2nd Battalion. In this capacity, Bauer took part in the battles at Alnoer and Düppel during the campaign against Denmark in 1849 . In mid-August 1849 he was promoted to aggregate Prime Lieutenant , at the end of May 1850 he was assigned to the regiment and on April 10, 1854 again transferred to the 1st Infantry Regiment "Elector". As a captain , he was appointed company commander at the end of April 1857, and in this capacity Bauer joined the rifle battalion on January 5, 1862 .

After the lost war against Prussia and the annexation of the Electorate , Bauer joined the Prussian Army on October 30, 1866 and was aggregated to the 1st West Prussian Grenadier Regiment No. 6 . After his promotion to major , he was given command of the 2nd Battalion stationed in Poznan on September 25, 1867 . Bauer led his battalion in the war against France in 1870/71 at Weißenburg and Wörth , before Paris and at Mont Valérien . He was badly wounded during the Battle of Sedan . Winner of both classes of the Iron Cross he was after the peace agreement in 1871 commander of the Fusilier Battalion on 18 November and on 18 January 1872 to lieutenant colonel . As a result of the wound he suffered at Sedan, Bauer was no longer able to be used in the field. He was therefore put up for disposition on June 18, 1874, conferring the character of a colonel with a pension , and appointed commander of the Landwehr district of Stettin. On May 19, 1882, Bauer received the patent for his rank and in mid-December 1888 the Crown Order II. Class with the number "50". He was released from his position on October 15, 1889, when he was given the character of major general.

family

Bauer married Marie d'Orville (1824–1862). After her untimely death, he married Elisabeth Rath (* 1834) on October 18, 1867 in Glogau . The marriage resulted in three sons who were raised to the hereditary Prussian nobility on January 18, 1901 by Kaiser Wilhelm II :
