Karl Friedrich Bauer , von Bauer since 1882 (born May 26, 1816 in Kassel , † April 21, 1896 in Wiesbaden ) was a Prussian major general and commander of Strasbourg .

Life

origin

Karl was a son of the Elector General of Hesse, Philipp Bauer (1775-1851) and his wife Henriette, née von Lengerke (1790-1875). His brothers Wilhelm (1819–1890) and Georg (1823–1903) also became Prussian major general.

Military career

Bauer visited the cadet school in Kassel and was on 21 August 1835 as Portepeefähnrich the 2nd Infantry Regiment "Prins Solm" the Kurhessische Army transferred. He was promoted to Second Lieutenant at the end of September 1835, initially in the 1st (Leib) Infantry Regiment and at the end of June 1837 in the Leib-Guard Regiment . From the beginning of May 1843 to the beginning of April 1849, Bauer was adjutant of the 2nd Battalion and then rose to the position of prime lieutenant in the middle of the month . With the promotion to captain he was aggregated into his regiment on November 29, 1853 and commanded as a place major by Kassel. After a brief assignment to the service of Elector Friedrich Wilhelm I , Bauer was again active as a field major in Kassel and returned to military service at the end of March 30, 1857 when he was appointed company commander in the Leib-Guard Regiment. From the end of June 1857 to mid-March 1859, he was commanded again as a major in Kassel under position à la suite of his regiment. In mid-August 1864 he was promoted to major and at the end of December of the following year he was appointed commander of the 1st battalion.

After the lost war against Prussia and the annexation of the electorate , Bauer joined the Prussian Army on October 30, 1866 , was employed as commander of the 2nd Battalion in the 5th Westphalian Infantry Regiment No. 53 and rose to lieutenant colonel at the end of March 1868 on. During the mobilization on the occasion of the war against France , Bauer became commander of the Landwehr occupation regiment in Wesel on July 18, 1870 . During the siege of Metz on September 26, 1870, he took command of the 1st Combined Posensche Landwehr Regiment. From January 11, 1871 he was in command of the right section of the siege troops off Longwy . Bauer was promoted to colonel shortly afterwards and was appointed commander after the fall of the city and fortress. Awarded the Iron Cross II. Class, he was transferred to the army officers on March 25, 1871 and appointed commander of the 3rd Rhenish Infantry Regiment No. 29 on June 20, 1871 . In position à la suite of his regiment, Bauer was appointed commander of Diedenhofen on November 12, 1874 . This was followed on January 12, 1875 as a commandant of Strasbourg. In this position he received five days later the character of major general and at the beginning of May 1877 the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd class with oak leaves. With the award of the Crown Order II. Class with a star, he was put up for disposal on January 13, 1881 with a pension .

After his departure , Kaiser Wilhelm I elevated him to the hereditary Prussian nobility on June 7, 1882 .

Bauer married on May 15, 1849 in Kassel with Sophie Freiin Treusch von Buttlar-Brandenfels (1820–1887). The following children were born from the marriage:
