Wilhelm Stephan Friedrich von Schmidt (born December 25, 1799 in Berlin , † February 2, 1867 in Görlitz ) was a Prussian lieutenant general .

Life

Wilhelm was a son of the Prussian captain of the artillery Friedrich von Schmidt (1763-1812) and his wife Magdalena Henriette, née Kanow (1767-1852). His father was on July 6, 1798 by King Friedrich Wilhelm III. was raised to the hereditary Prussian nobility . The Prussian infantry general Christoph von Schmidt (1809–1876) was his younger brother.

Career

After visiting the cadet house in Berlin, Schmidt joined the 34th Infantry Regiment of the Prussian Army in Mainz on April 19, 1817 as porter ensign . In mid-July 1817 he was transferred to the 9th Infantry Regiment , where he was promoted to second lieutenant in early December 1818 . From April 15, 1828 Schmidt was commanded as adjutant of the 4th Infantry Brigade in Bromberg and was aggregated to his regiment on March 20, 1831 while remaining in this position as prime lieutenant . This was followed from the end of March 1836 as a captain and adjutant at the General Command of III. Army Corps . Schmidt then acted from April 7, 1842 to March 30, 1846 as a company commander in the 12th Infantry Regiment and was then promoted to major in the 20th Infantry Regiment . At the same time he was commander of the 3rd Combined Reserve Battalion in Küstrin . At the beginning of May 1848 Schmidt was appointed commander of the 2nd Battalion and put up for disposal on December 20, 1849 with a pension .

On June 13, 1850, Schmidt rejoined the army and was re-employed in his old regiment. With a position à la suite , he was appointed commander of the Jülich Fortress on July 22, 1852 . After he was promoted to lieutenant colonel in this position in mid-March 1853 , Schmidt was appointed commander of the 29th Infantry Regiment on May 23, 1854 and promoted to colonel on July 13, 1854 . He came to Frankfurt (Oder) on May 14, 1857 as commander of the 10th Infantry Brigade , became major general on May 22, 1858, and on March 13, 1861 Schmidt was initially assigned to lead the 7th Division in Magdeburg . On July 24, 1861, he was appointed division commander and on October 18, 1861, he was promoted to lieutenant general. On April 15, 1862, he took over the 9th Division in Glogau and on May 17, 1866, transferred to the officers of the army for the duration of the mobilization on the occasion of the war against Austria, he was entrusted with the leadership of the II Army Corps . Schmidt led his corps in the battles near Gitschin and Königgrätz and was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle 1st class with oak leaves and swords on the ring for his work .

With the peace treaty , Schmidt took a vacation to restore his health and resigned on September 17, 1866 in his old position as commander of the 9th Division. He died on February 2, 1867.

family

Schmidt married Adelheid von der Schleuse (1816–1849), daughter of Major General Ludwig von der Schleuse (1782–1845) in Stettin on June 9, 1836 . The later Prussian Major General Paul von Schmidt (1837–1905) and their daughter Marie (* 1844) emerged from the marriage.
