Winfried Hubert Frey (born November 10, 1940 in Bruchsal / Baden ) is a German German philologist and anti-Semitism researcher .

Life

Frey comes from a family of craftsmen and farmers in Baden and attended an elementary school in his birthplace between 1946 and 1950.

Education and profession

Then from 1950 Frey graduated from the Justus-Knecht-Gymnasium in Bruchsal, where he graduated from high school in 1959 . From 1959 Frey did military service and then studied between 1960 and 1966 in Heidelberg and Freiburg im Breisgau the subjects of German, history and political science . In 1966 he passed the state examination with a thesis on Gottfried von Straßburg and received his doctorate in 1970 , having since moved to Frankfurt am Main , on the subject of " Text-critical investigations on Ottes Eraclius ."

In 1972 he received a professorship in the Department of German Philology at the Institute for German Language and Literature at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt / Main. He retired in 2003 and lives in Kriftel .

Frey sees his life's work in researching the prehistory of anti-Semitism in a variety of German texts from the Middle Ages and the early modern period (e.g. theological writings, sermons , spiritual and secular games , pamphlets , pamphlets ) and their effects well into the 21st century , in order to counteract their mythization and belittlement . With this and through other activities (e.g. Airaines / Piława Górna / Kriftel partnership ; Scholars for Peace in the Middle East ) he advocates the peaceful coexistence of all religions and peoples.

Awards

Frey is committed to the reconciliation of Christians and Jews . For this he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon of the Federal Order of Merit in May 2016 . In 2001 Frey had already received the plaque of honor from the Kriftel municipality for his political commitment. In November 2014 he was awarded the partnership medal of the municipality of Kriftel .

Private life

Frey is of Catholic creed . He is a member of the Workers' Welfare Association and the Social Democratic Party of Germany . Since 1966 he has been married to the classical philologist and Anglicist Uta Frey, who is a retired director of studies .

Research and Teaching

In teaching and research, Frey devotes himself above all to the topic of anti - Semitism in medieval and early modern literature , an age that, for example, " offers a wealth of examples of human intolerance and stigmatization in passion and carnival plays ". As an author, Frey was only able to find an editor for his scientific works in Germany after one of his works had been published in Tel Aviv by the historian Walter Grab , who lived there.
