Airaines is a French commune with 2,378 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Somme in the region of Hauts-de-France .

history

A former Roman settlement between Amiens and Dieppe . A cluniac monastery was founded in the 14th century. Due to disputes, there were two castles, one of which was restored in the 17th century after being destroyed several times. In the Middle Ages Airaines was a free community, then it fell under feudal rule until the Revolution.

economy

There are controlled designations of origin (AOC) for lamb (Prés-salés de la baie de Somme) in the municipality . The lambs graze in the salty meadows of the Somme Bay .
