Cagny ( Picard : Cagnin ) is a northern French municipality with 1204 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Somme in the region of Hauts-de-France . The municipality is located in the arrondissement of Amiens , is part of the Communauté d'agglomération Amiens Métropole and belongs to the canton of Amiens-5 .

geography

The suburb of Amiens is located around 4.5 km southeast of the capital of the department and immediately adjacent to it and south of Longueau on the left (southern) bank of the boggy Avre on the road to Boves . Cagny has a direct connection to the A29 autoroute .

history

In Cagny there is a prehistoric site in the Bois de la Garenne with finds of Homo heidelbergensis , also in L'Épinette. In the Gallo-Roman era, Cagny was inhabited by the Ambian tribe, and traces of a Roman villa have also been found.

In 1146 the place is first mentioned as Cannicum . In the High Middle Ages he was dependent on the castellany of Boves, who had the right to hunt down here (droit de garenne). After being sacked by Spanish troops in 1643, the castle, which served as a military hospital during World War I , was rebuilt in 1650. During the Franco-Prussian War , Cagny was occupied by Prussian troops for 17 days. During World War II , Cagny suffered from Allied air raids, but less than Amiens and Longueau.
