Saint-Acheul ( Picard : Saint-Acheu ) is a northern French municipality with 27 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Somme in the region of Hauts-de-France . The municipality is located in the Arrondissement of Amiens , is part of the Communauté de communes du Territoire Nord Picardie and belongs to the canton of Doullens . The community gained fame for hand ax finds, which led to the fact that a Paleolithic epoch, the Acheuléen , was named after the village and the Archaeological Garden of Saint-Acheul was created there.

geography

The municipality on the border with the Pas-de-Calais department is not far from the left (southern) bank of the Authie River, around 37 kilometers northeast of Amiens and around eight kilometers north of Bernaville .

Toponymy and History

The place is like a district of Amiens, after which the Stone Age culture of the Acheuléen takes its name, named after a local saint from Amiens.

Saint Ulphe on the west portal of Amiens Cathedral

In the Middle Ages there was a monastery here, where Saint Ulphia from Amiens lived as a hermit in the 8th century.

The first hand ax was discovered in Saint-Acheul in the 1830s. From 1854 to 1870, around 800 tools per year were found in several sand and gravel pits, so that people soon spoke of the “Diluvium of Saint-Acheul”, and finally of the “Acheuléen”. Between 1905 and 1907 more than 5,000 tools were found in the Bultel-Tellier gravel pit at a depth of 8.7 m. Later artifacts were found in other layers, which had been made from the Moustérien and in the Levallois technique and which go back to Neanderthals .
