geography

The northern French municipality of Doullens is located on the upper reaches of the Authie , roughly in the middle of the Amiens - Arras - Abbeville triangle .

history

Doullens was the seat of the Viscounts of Vermandois and later Ponthieu (Hare).

In 1225 Doullens came under the rule of the French king.

1475 the city was by Louis XI. burned down because she was on the side of the Duke of Burgundy. In 1523 the city was besieged by Anglo-Burgundian troops, but steadfastly defended itself. In 1595 the city was captured after a siege by the Spaniards, but returned to France in 1598 with the Treaty of Vervins.

Under Francis I , De Costello began building a citadel in 1530 . The fortification was one of the first of its kind in France. The citadel of Doullens served as a prison for various men and Auguste Blanqui , Armand Barbès and François-Vincent Raspail . In the 1950s the fortification served as a women's prison. In the film Astragalus with Horst Buchholz (1968), the prison is a place of action.

On March 26, 1918, Ferdinand Foch , then still a general, was promoted to sole commander of the Allied forces on the western front and thus to marshal in the town hall, which was built in 1898 on the site of the former Saint Michel monastery.

The former municipal administration with its Beffroi (German belfry ) from the 15th century has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2005 .
