Wolfgang Krebs (born November 18, 1933 in Dresden ; † November 9, 1981 near Fulda ) was a German geologist and university professor . He dealt with paleogeography , the structure and mineralization of the Devonian reef limestone complexes .

Life

Wolfgang Krebs was born as the third child of a pediatrician in Dresden. In 1945 the family moved to Leipzig . He graduated from high school in 1952 at the Thomas Gymnasium in Leipzig . In 1953 he began studying geosciences at the University of Frankfurt , where he passed the diploma examination in the 1957/58 winter semester . He then continued his training with a doctoral degree with Hans-Joachim Lippert in Frankfurt. In 1959 he did his doctorate under Karl Krejci-Graf on the facies , stratigraphy and volcanism of the Upper Devonian in the Dillmulde , in the Rhenish Slate Mountains . After completing his doctorate, Wolfgang Krebs worked as a scientific assistant and was employed in geoscientific survey of the terrain . On January 20, 1960, he started a scientific assistant position at the Institute for Geology and Geology at the Technical University of Darmstadt.

In his habilitation , he dealt with the stratigraphy and facies of the Upper Devonian and Lower Carboniferous in the Langenaubach - Breitscheider Riffs in the Rhenish Slate Mountains. Even after completing his habilitation in February 1965, he continued to research the field of facies distribution in Devonian reefs in the Rhenish Slate Mountains. Here he published over 30 publications over the next 15 years, some of which, such as The Devonian Reefs in Central Europe, are now regarded as geological standard works in this field. Since 1969 Wolfgang Krebs has been researching the mineralization of carbonate complexes. In addition to the reefs in the Rhenish Slate Mountains, Krebs investigated carbonate rock complexes and associated deep-sea sediments in Europe and North America in the following years.

On August 4, 1969, he was offered the chair for geology and paleontology at the Technical University of Braunschweig . On February 24 of the following year he was appointed director of the Geological-Paleontological Institute. From 1973 to 1975 he was dean of the university's natural science faculty. In 1976, a member of a research group that was Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources , the worldwide with the formation of dissemination of stratabound copper - lead - zinc - ore deposits dealt.

He died on November 9, 1981 in a traffic accident on the autobahn near Fulda.

Wolfgang Krebs was married and had four children.

Memberships and honors

Wolfgang Krebs was an active member of various geological and scientific associations. In 1966 he received the Hermann Credner Prize of the German Geological Society, endowed with DM 5000, for his habilitation thesis . On December 16, 1971, he joined the Braunschweig Scientific Society . From 1972 to 1975 he was Vice President of the German Geological Society, whose President he was until his death in 1979. He was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Raw Materials. In addition, Krebs was a member of the Geological Society of America and the Society of Economic Mineralogists and Paleontologists, among others . In 1976 he was appointed visiting professor at the University of Calgary and 1979 at the University of Jordan at Amman . The life's work of Wolfgang Krebs was commemorated in a symposium on barite deposits and a special volume in the journal of the German Geological Society (ZDGG).
