World Happiness Report

The World Happiness Report is an annual report published by the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network . The report includes life satisfaction rankings in different countries around the world and data analysis from different perspectives. The report was drafted by, among others, Jeffrey Sachs , Richard Layard and John F. Helliwell .

Creation of the World Happiness Report

In July 2011, United Nations General Assembly Resolution 65/309 invited participating countries to assess the happiness of their people and use this data to better direct their policies. On April 2, 2012, a meeting at the highest level of the UN followed, which was called Wellbeing and Happiness: Defining a New Economic Paradigm . The UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and the Prime Minister of Bhutan , Jigme Thinley chaired the meeting . Bhutan is the only country in the world that uses so-called gross national happiness instead of gross domestic product as the main development indicator.

The first World Happiness Report was issued as the basic text of the above meeting on April 1st, 2012 and attracted international attention. The report included the state of perceived happiness and life satisfaction around the world, the reasons for happiness and unhappiness, and political inferences supported by case studies. The second World Happiness Report was published in 2013 and since then, with the exception of 2014, a new report has been created every year. The reports primarily used data from the Gallup World Poll, conducted by the Gallup Organization , headquartered in Washington, DC . Each report is publicly available and can be downloaded from the World Happiness Report website.

Review content

In the reports, experts from a variety of sciences, including economics, psychology, survey analysis, and statistics, describe how measuring wellbeing can be effectively used to track the progress of nations. Each report is divided into chapters. These deal with life satisfaction, mental health, the objective consequences of happiness and satisfaction, the importance of values ​​and the resulting political implications. This study is being carried out in parallel with the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development , which created the OECD Better Life Index in order to create an objective measure of subjective well-being and life satisfaction.
