Y ( waɪ ) is a census-designated place (CDP) in Matanuska-Susitna Borough in Alaska in the United States . The village is between Willow and Talkeetna on the George Parks Highway . Y includes the Montana Creek and Sunshine settlements . At Sunshine , the Highway and Talkeetna Spur Road form a Y-shaped intersection.
history
Athabasques from the Ahtna group lived in the Talkeetna Mountains and had a village at the mouth of Sunshine Creek , the name of which means Tsuk Qayeh, which means "old village". Dena'ina -Athabasques lived in winter not far from today's Talkeetna on the Deshka River and on the middle reaches of the Susitna River . There was a settlement on the Kashwitna River . In 1915, during the construction work on the Alaska Railroad , Montana Creek became a small Dena'ina village. The railroad and the highway completed in 1971 promoted settlement in the region.
Economy and Infrastructure
Many residents of the CDP are self-employed as small businesses or work in the catchment area of the cities of Palmer and Wasilla . The area is accessible from the George Parks Highway. A runway is available for air traffic in the nearby town of Talkeetna . There is one school in the area which is attended by around 200 students. Medical care is provided by hospitals and ambulances in Talkeetna, Palmer, Trapper Creek and Anchorage .

At the time of the 2000 census ( US Census 2000 ) Y CDP had 956 inhabitants on a land area of 863.5 km². The mean age was 40.8 years (US national mean: 35.3 years). The per capita income (engl. The per capita income ) amounted to US $ 15,437 (national average of USA: US $ 21,587). 17.4% of the population had their income below the poverty line (national average in the USA: 12.4%). 22.1% of the population are of Irish and 11.5% of German descent. About 11.2% of the population are descendants of the Native Americans .
