You Know You're Right is a song by the American rock band Nirvana . It was released on October 8, 2002 as a single from their best-of album Nirvana , which was released in late October 2002. The song was first performed live in 1993.

background

You Know You're Right was recorded by Nirvana on January 30, 1994 at Robert Lang Studios in Seattle , Washington . At the time, the song did not have an official title, but was simply referred to as Kurt's Song # 1 on the track list of the recording session. The song was only played live by Nirvana once, on October 23, 1993 at Aragon Palace in Chicago, Illinois . Another live version of the track was recorded in 1995 by Cobain's widow Courtney Love and her band Hole at an MTV Unplugged gig.

For years there has been confusion about the original name of the song. This is due to the fact that Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl at the concert at Aragon Palace, wrongly announced the title All Apologies and not the You Know You're Right already tuned by frontman Cobain as the last song of the concert. Since Grohl's announcement about recordings is difficult to understand, numerous suspicions quickly arose about the name of the hitherto unknown song. Rumors quickly emerged that the title would be Autopilot or On a Mountain .

publication

Since there were disputes between the other Nirvana members Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic as well as Courtney Love about the handling of the musical estate of Cobain, which among other things led to a dispute in court between the two disputing parties, it lasted until October 8, 2002, until You Know You're Right was finally released.

For the launch of the promo single, Chris Hafner produced a music video that was cut from the band's concert excerpts.
