Zeki Önatlı (born October 30, 1968 in Manisa ) is a former Turkish football player and coach. By working for Beşiktaş Istanbul and Kocaelispor , he is associated with these associations. Especially through his work at Beşiktaş he is seen by the club and fans as part of the legendary team that won the Turkish championship three times in a row in the seasons 1989/90 , 1990/91 and 1991/92 .

Player career

society

Önatlı began his professional football career in 1979 with the first division club Bursaspor . Here he was discovered for the Turkish U-18 national team and began to play for them from 1985. In the fall of 1985 Önatlı was given to the third division Bergamaspor . At his new club, he quickly made it into the starting eleven. Through his achievements at club and national team level, the big clubs of the Turkish 1st Lig became aware of him and tried to sign him. Eventually Önatlıs move to Beşiktaş Istanbul came about, where he played under English coach Gordon Milne . In his first season for the black and yellow, the 1987/88 season , Önatlı played almost all of his team's competitive games and became an integral part of the team after just one season. His team finished the league behind Galatasaray Istanbul as runners-up. Önatlı rose through his achievements this season only to the Turkish U-21 international and a little later to the Turkish national player . In his second season he also played consistently as a regular player and was also runner-up with his team. With the 1989/90 season Önatlı lost his regular place, but came as a supplementary player to regular assignments. So he developed into a wild card and secured several points for his team with his hits. In this role he was an integral part of the team, described by the club and fans as legendary , which won the Turkish championship three times in a row in the seasons 1989/90 , 1990/91 and 1991/92 . After the 1992/93 season failed, the successful coach Milne was replaced by Christoph Daum in the summer of 1993 . This coach ordered a revision in the squad. After Önatlı still participated in the pre-season preparatory camp, he was then put on the list of players by Daum with whom he did not plan.

When Beşiktaş sorted out, Önatlı moved to league rivals Kocaelispor in the summer of 1993 . At this club, he immediately established himself as a service provider and played here for the next six and a half seasons. With this club he finished the 1995/96 season as fifth and in the 1996/97 season they were Turkish Cup winners . During his time at Kocaelispor, he was involved in several of the club's successes and is therefore one of the most important players in the club's history.

In the spring of 2000 Önatlı left Kocaelispor and hired the first division club İstanbulspor . With this club he played the following three and a half seasons and then ended his career. At Istanbulspor he played with former colleagues Recep Çetin and Gökhan Keskin from his time in Beşiktaş.

National team

Önatlı first played for the Turkish national teams while at Bursaspor . In a qualifying game for the U-18 European Football Championship 1986 of the Turkish U-18 national team against the U-18 of Czechoslovakia , he played the full length of the game. After this game Önatlı ran nine more times for the Turkish U-18s.

Due to his convincing performance for Beşiktaş Istanbul Önatlı was nominated in October 1987 for the Turkish U21 national team and made his debut in this age group on October 13, 1987 against the English U21 national team . From then on Önatlı was one of the regularly nominated players of the Turkish U-21s for two years.

Within these two years he made his debut in the Turkish national team under national coach Tınaz Tırpan on March 16, 1988 during a friendly against the Hungarian national team . After this encounter he was nominated for the qualifying games of the 1988 Summer Olympics for the Olympic selection. He played for all three of the latter national teams over the next two years. They just missed qualifying for the Summer Olympics.

In 1988 and 1989 Önatlı was nominated four more times in the squad of the Turkish national team and came in one of these games for his second and last international appearance.

Coaching career

In the spring of 2005 Önatlı was introduced to Beşiktaş Istanbul as an assistant coach and assisted the head coach Rıza Çalımbay , his former team captain from his Beşiktaşer time. After Çalımbay resigned from his office in November 2005, Önatlı continued to work as an assistant coach and assisted Çalımbay's successor, Jean Tigana .
