Zwergenklau in Vorarlberg election campaign

The dwarf theft in Vorarlberg's election campaign occurred before the state elections in Vorarlberg in 2014 . The disappearance of 2% of the garden gnomes used as “campaign workers ” for the SPÖ triggered short-term media coverage with international reporting.

Before the state elections, the SPÖ Vorarlberg decided to set up 1,000 garden gnomes in the state instead of campaign posters. She ordered a total of 20,000 copies. The figures that were not displayed should be distributed to the voters. The dwarves with dark sunglasses, known as Coolman , carry small signs with campaign messages. According to Michael Ritsch , the top candidate and party leader of the Vorarlberg SPÖ, the dwarf symbolism was chosen deliberately. The dwarf was "the first hacker , the first social democrat" , and the importance of the Vorarlberg SPÖ - in 2009 it received only 10.02% of the votes - was alluded to with self-irony.

The dwarfs have a total value of 140,000 euros.

At the end of August 2014, the SPÖ Vorarlberg announced that 400 dwarfs were missing between Rankweil and Bregenz . SPÖ state manager Reinhold Einwallner stated that you can take individual garden gnomes home with you, but not 400 of them. He suspected that the Vorarlberg People's Party was behind the stolen garden gnomes. Their country manager Dietmar Wetz firmly rejected these allegations.

A short time later, supporters of the SPÖ observed four men - one of whom was a councilor on a list of citizens close to the ÖVP - while some dwarves were being transported away and filed a complaint with the police for theft. On September 12, 2014, the Vorarlberg public prosecutor dropped the proceedings because "the intent of the theft could not be proven for actual reasons" .

Media coverage

The affair of the disappeared SPÖ dwarfs was initially only of regional interest. Orf.at , the internet service of Austrian radio and the Vorarlberger Nachrichten reported throughout Austria . The garden gnomes became an international theme on August 24th. The BBC reported under the heading “Austrian party rues disappearance of 400 garden gnomes” . This was followed by other British media. The story reached the US media through the Associated Press news agency . The Washington Post from Washington, DC published the article "400 gnomes disappeared in Austria, and it's causing a political scandal" on August 26th . The CBC / Radio Canada also reported on the incident on August 25 under the title "Garden gnome alert: 400 missing in Austria" . Dates of a dwarf

The garden gnome, adapted as an “election campaign helper”, is a series product from ESC art GmbH in Neustadt near Coburg ( Coburg district ) and is sold under the name “Der Coole”. The dwarf is 360 mm tall, about 180 mm wide and weighs about 500 grams (without election billboard). With the election billboard, the dwarf is about 490 mm high. It is made of plastic .
