Cypriot music

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The music of Cyprus encompasses a wide variety of classical, folk, and popular music styles. New tendencies often have their origin in Agia Napa , a resort town which, as a musical nucleus in its development, resembles the island of Ibiza .

middle Ages

Cyprus experienced numerous changes of rule before the Middle Ages and formed an important outpost of Christianity and European civilization during the Crusades . In the course of the eventful history, a variety of musical styles from Armenian , French, Turkish to Greek music reached the island. The island reached its cultural peak between 1359 and 1432. During this time, one of the most important collections of late medieval music was created on the island . All the preserved pieces are anonymous and none of them appear in other collections. The repertoire, however, turns out to be an offshoot of French culture at the Cypriot court.

During this great period, Pierre I. de Lusignan undertook a three-year trip to Europe, from which he brought an ensemble of musicians with him that had so impressed him that he paid Charles V 80 gold francs for them in Reims . On his return to Cyprus, Pierre brought the French Ars Nova and later the Ars subtilior . The French musicians were able to establish themselves well in Cyprus, and so the city of Nicosia became a metropolis of the Ars Subtilior.

Janus I. de Lusignan developed Cypriot music in a variety of styles. After her marriage to Louis, Prince of Geneva, his daughter Anna brought with her a 159-page manuscript containing over two hundred polyphonic sacred and secular compositions. The manuscript is now kept in the National Library of Turin .

Classical music

In the field of classical music , the Republic of Cyprus has had a classical symphony orchestra , the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra , via the Ministry of Education and Culture for thirty years , which is a full-time professional orchestra based in the capital Nicosia (in the Pallas Theater there , in the historical old town ) and from there regularly also the larger coastal cities ( Paphos , Limassol , Larnaka ) with concerts. The concerts take place in the city's theaters and - depending on the season - sometimes also outdoors. The Cyprus Symphony Orchestra is also the orchestra of the annual Pafos Aphrodite Festival Cyprus opera festival . The Cyprus Symphony Orchestra cooperates and produces regularly with the state broadcasting company , the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation (CyBC) for radio and TV . The current chief conductor and artistic director of the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra is the German conductor Jens Georg Bachmann .

In addition, through the Ministry of Education and Culture, the Republic of Cyprus maintains a national, nationwide music school for individual instrumental lessons, ensembles and the national youth symphony orchestra, the Cyprus Youth Symphony Orchestra .

The umbrella organization for the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra , the state music school and the Cyprus Youth Symphony Orchestra is the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra Foundation, which as a foundation is subordinate to the Ministry of Education and Culture.

Traditional music

The folk music in Cyprus is similar to the Greek and Turkish music and includes dances like Sousta , Syrtos , zeibekiko , Tatsia and the Karşılama suites. Unlike the four karsilamas in Turkey, the suites in Greek music in Cyprus consist of five karsilamas (Greek: καρσιλαμάς), different for men and women, some of them vary in the tempo of the 9/8. Traditional music is based on the modal macams .

Turkish and Greek Cypriots use the violin as the main solo instrument, accompanied by a long-necked lute laouto by the Greek Cypriots and by the oud by the Turkish Cypriots. The accordion , percussion instruments and the magnetic split flute pithkiavli (also kaval ) are used.

skirt

In Northern Cyprus , the SOS (band) founded in 1987 is the most famous rock group. Heavy metal and Greek rock by the well-known metal band Armaggedon are successful in the south .

Hip hop

Rap music in Cyprus spread in 1993 when John Wu and Pono Kefalos ( Head Ache ) first sang in Cypriot dialect wai Vaomenoi Esso (Locked Home). Later, John Wu and Pono Kefalos worked individually, the latter in close collaboration with Kinisiotherapeftis (kinesitherapist). Other hip-hop bands have also had success, including Sofos MC (Wise MC), Invisible Underground Threat , Hardcore Headz , Part of the Soul , des One-Way and FTW. Some of them rap in Greek, others in Cypriot.
