This is a list of Doctor Who television serials. Most serials up to 1989's Survival were multi-episode stories; the characters in brackets after the serial titles indicate the code used by the production team to designate the serial (where applicable) and are followed by the number of episodes in the serial. Unless otherwise noted, episodes in this period are 25 minutes long.

Doctor Who ceased broadcasting in 1989, then resumed in 2005. The original series (1963–1989), generally consists of multi-episode serials. The 2005 revival trades the earlier serial format for a run of self-contained episodes, interspersed with occasional multi-part stories and structured into loose story arcs.
A number of serials from the 1960s are either missing or incomplete, while some of the early 1970s episodes are only held in black and white. See this list for more details.

The story numbers below are meant as a guide to placement in the overall context of the programme. There is some dispute, for instance, about whether to count Season 23's The Trial of a Time Lord as one or as four serials,<ref>{{cite web|url= http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/classic/episodeguide/trialtimelord1/detail.shtml|title=The Trial of a Time Lord: 1–4 : Details|access-date= 27 October 2007 |last1 =Howe |first1 = David J.|author1-link=David J. The three-digit story numbers are not official designations but are merely to serve as a guide to where the story stands in the overall context of the programme. There is some dispute among fans about, for example, whether to count Season 23's The Trial of a Time Lord as one or four serials (the official production codes count it as three!) and whether the uncompleted Shada should be included. The numbering scheme used here reflects that used in popular reference books like The Discontinuity Guide and on the Region 1 DVD releases, which count Trial as four serials and includes Shada.

Series overview
Starting with the 2005 revival, the production team abandoned the traditional serial format for a largely self-contained episodic format (with the occasional two-part story and loose story arc elements), similar to the style of American dramas such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer or the Star Trek spin-offs. Unless otherwise noted, the new episodes are 45 minutes long.
The following table dictates the season or series in question for the programme as a whole.
<!-- This table is copied to "List of Doctor Who episodes (1963–1989). Bear in mind that changes here will appear there also.-->

Regular seasons
In the first two seasons and most of the third season, each episode of a serial had an individual title; no serial had an overall onscreen title until The Savages. However, the earlier stories did have "umbrella" titles that were not used onscreen, and much confusion has existed over the years, with many sources using different titles due to early fandom and reference works being unable to initially access the production files.

During the early seasons of the programme, most serials were linked together, usually one leading directly into the next, although there are some breaks such as between the second season finale The Time Meddler and the third season premiere, Galaxy 4.

Season 21 (1984)
Beginning with this season, serials were no longer directly linked for the first time since Season 18, with the sole exception being the end of Frontios and the start of Resurrection of the Daleks. Resurrection was written and filmed as 4 25-minute episodes, but was re-edited into two 45-minute episodes to accommodate coverage of the 1984 Winter Olympics, though the 25-minute versions were circulated to broadcasters overseas and released on video.

No title was ever used for this project other than Doctor Who, which is highly confusing in a listing of this nature. However, Enemy Within was suggested as an alternative title by producer Philip Segal and has been used by many fans lacking any other title by which to refer to the television movie; other titles have also been used informally by fan groups. The DVD release calls it "The Movie".

In 2005, the BBC relaunched Doctor Who after a 16-year absence from episodic television. The production team chose to restart the series numbering from scratch, but some fans of the programme prefer to label the 2005 series as Season 27, the 2006 series as Season 28, and so on. The renumbering had led to speculation as to whether the "new series" was in fact not connected to the 1963–89 series; Russell T. Davies, executive producer of the revival, stated explicitly that it is a continuation, and several episodes contain references to the older show. The new series changed to 16:9 widescreen, with a standard episode length of 45 minutes. For the first time since the 1965–66 season, each episode has an individual title, even though some stories are two-parters.

Ninth Doctor
In 2005, the BBC relaunched Doctor Who after a 15-year absence from episodic television, with Russell T Davies, Julie Gardner, and Mal Young as executive producers, Phil Collinson as producer, and Christopher Eccleston taking the lead role of the Ninth Doctor.

The revival is a continuation of the original series. The new series is formatted to a 16:9 widescreen display ratio, and a standard episode length of 45 minutes. For the first time since the 1965–1966 season, each episode has a title, and most stand alone as complete stories. The show also returned to its traditional Saturday evening slot.

Latest revision as of 07:47, 15 May 2024

Doctor Who is a British science fiction television programme produced by the BBC. As of 11 May 2024, 877 episodes of Doctor Who have aired. This includes one television movie and multiple specials, and encompasses 306 stories over 40 seasons, starting in 1963. Additionally, four charity specials and two animated serials have also been aired. The programme's high episode count has resulted in Doctor Who holding the world record for the highest number of episodes of a science-fiction programme.[1] As of November 2023, up to a seventeenth series has been planned.[2]

The story numbers below are meant as a guide to placement in the overall context of the programme.[3] There is some dispute, for instance, about whether to count Season 23's The Trial of a Time Lord as one or as four serials,[4] and whether the unfinished serial Shada should be included.[5] The numbering scheme in this list follows the official website's episode guide.[3] Other sources, such as the Region 1 classic Doctor Who DVD releases, use different numbering schemes, which diverge after the 108th story, The Horns of Nimon (1979–1980).

Notes[edit]

 1. ^ The First Doctor remained for the first two serials of season 4. The Second Doctor featured for the remainder of the season from the third serial, The Power of the Daleks.
 2. ^ Also known by its subtitle, The Key to Time
 3. ^ Shada was left unfinished due to a strike. The story was later completed and officially released on home media in 2017. The voices of the original actors with new animation was incorporated to bridge the gaps between the recorded live-action segments. It is not included in the episode or story counts as it was not broadcast.
 4. ^ The Fifth Doctor regenerated in the sixth serial of season 21. The Sixth Doctor featured only in the final serial, The Twin Dilemma.
 5. ^ A change in transmission format for this season only as episodes were 45 minutes instead of the usual 24 minutes. Thus a traditional 4-part story was transmitted in 2 parts.
 6. ^ Also known by its subtitle, The Trial of a Time Lord
 7. ^ Also known by its subtitle, Flux
 8. ^ These specials consist of the 2008 Christmas, 2009 Easter, 2009 November and the 2009–10 Christmas/New Year's Day episodes.
 9. ^ These specials consist of the 50th Anniversary and 2013 Christmas episodes.
 10. ^ This episode was the first episode of the twelfth series (and is only counted in the § Regular seasons table of this article), and thus not a special aired outside of a series, but it was aired four days before the twelfth series' traditional timeslot in order to air deliberately on New Year's Day.
 11. ^ These specials consist of the 2022 New Year's Day, 2022 Easter, and 2022 BBC Centenary episodes.[9][10]
 12. ^ These specials consist of the 60th anniversary episodes.

Episodes[edit]

Ninth Doctor[edit]

Series 1 (2005)[edit]

The 2005 series constitutes a loose story arc, dealing with the consequences of the Time War and the mystery of the seemingly omnipresent phrase 'Bad Wolf'.
