Éric Gélinas (born May 8, 1991 in Ottawa , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with Rögle BK in the Svenska Hockeyligan since February 2019 and plays for them in the position of defender .

Career

youth

Éric Gélinas was born in Vanier , a district of the Canadian capital Ottawa , into a baseball family. His father, Marc Gélinas, played, among others, for the Buffalo Bisons in the minor league baseball , and his brother, Karl Gélinas, is a baseball player and was drafted by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in 2003 . Karl, however, played ice hockey first when he was a child, so Eric did the same from the age of four.

After Éric Gélinas moved with the family to Montreal at the age of seven , he attended the Collège Charles-Lemoyne , a private high school , with whose ice hockey team he was active in the junior sector. In the 2007 entry draft of the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec (LHJMQ), one of the three highest Canadian junior leagues, the Lewiston MAINEiacs selected him in 16th position. He quickly established himself with the MAINEiacs and was the team's top defender in his second year. Through these achievements, the Central Scouting Service led him to 39th place among the most promising outfield players in North America for the upcoming NHL Entry Draft 2009 ; In addition, through this classification, he also took part in the CHL Top Prospects Game . In the actual draft, the New Jersey Devils then selected him in 54th position.

The following season 2009/10 Gélinas spent only half at the MAINEiacs and moved in winter 2010 to league rivals Saguenéens de Chicoutimi . This change was also due to the looming end of the MAINEiacs, who had already tried to move to another city since January 2009 due to financial difficulties; this did not materialize, so that the team was finally disbanded in May 2011. Gélinas finished the season in Chicoutimi and came in 28 remaining games on 12 scorer points. At the end of the season, he signed a three-year entry level contract with the New Jersey Devils, but remained in the LHJMQ for the time being.

In the following season he scored 24 scorer points in 35 games by January 2011 - although at that time only five teams had scored fewer points in the league than the Saguenéens. In January Gélinas then moved to the leader of the league, the Saint John Sea Dogs . With the Sea Dogs, he won the Coupe du Président as master of the LMHMQ at the end of the season and then the Memorial Cup 2011 , in which one could prevail against the champions of the two other top Canadian junior leagues.

New Jersey Devils

After these successes, the defender switched to the New Jersey Devils system and spent the entire 2011/12 season with the Albany Devils in the American Hockey League . There he scored 16 goals in 75 games, with which he (together with Clay Wilson ) was the most dangerous defender. This positive development was countered by a fracture of the lower jaw in October 2012 , which Gélinas suffered from a puck in a preparatory game; he was out for two months. After spending the rest of the season with the Albany Devils again, he was called up to the NHL squad in April 2014, making his National Hockey League debut on the penultimate day of the regular season .

In the following season 2013/14 Gélinas was for the first time mainly in the NHL in action, came in 60 games on 29 scorer points and was after Marek Židlický and Andy Greene the third best defender of the Devils in this category.

Colorado and Laval

In February 2016, Gélinas was signed by the Colorado Avalanche , which in return sent a third-round vote for the 2017 NHL Entry Draft to New Jersey. He left the organization of the Devils after almost six years and 156 completed NHL missions. The Canadian was in the service of the Avalanche until the summer of 2017, before his expiring contract was not renewed. In August he finally received a trial contract with the Canadiens de Montréal , in which he was not permanently engaged. Instead, he signed a one-year contract with their AHL farm team, the Rocket de Laval .

In August 2018 he joined the HC Slovan Bratislava from the Continental Hockey League (KHL) and played there until February 2019. He then left the KHL club and moved to Rögle BK in the Svenska Hockeyligan .
