Austria's hiking villages
Österreichs Wanderdörfer (ÖWD) is an association with 46 hiking regions and 58 hiking villages (as of 2020) in Austria , which focuses on the topics of "nature experience" and "exercise in nature" and "hiking in Austria". The motto “The Magic of Walking” is intended to convey hiking and appreciation of nature to vacationers.
General
The association reaches an area coverage of almost 50% of Austria. Austria's hiking villages were founded and looked after by the company TAO Beratungs- und Management GmbH based in Villach (Carinthia) under the management of Sieghard Preis. In 2019 Ulrich Andres took over the management. In order to ensure the quality of the hiking experience in the regions, the Austrian hiking seal of approval has existed since 2003. 34 hiking villages, trails and hosts in Austria's hiking villages currently meet the quality criteria of the seal.
history
The association was founded in 1991 under the name “Dorfurlaub in Österreich” and even then had the goal of supporting and promoting tourism according to strictly selected criteria such as the typical local character of the country, ecological load limits and minimum measures as well as social load limits. The focus has shifted more and more to the topic of hiking and so the focus of work was anchored in 1998 by name.
goals and tasks
The aim of the Austrian Hiking Villages Association is to promote hiking tourism in Austria and to convey the uniqueness of the landscapes to vacationers. All hiking regions and hiking villages must meet certain criteria in order to become members of the association. They should convey the adventure of nature, have an extensive hiking infrastructure and thus guarantee an excellent hiking holiday.
